H, IftTc| When selecting new carpets, what really counts is what you can't see OFFMIIK: QUALITY HOUSE CLIANINC By The Hoir Or Day •Floors Stripped •Office Cloning •Windows Washed •Gift Certificates FULLY INSUREDS BONDED 815-385-1877 <S> There's a lot more to to day's carpet than can be seen by the naked eye. It wasn't too long ago that the news in carpets was how they looked. First, there were the shags, then the plushes and, finally, the European ve lours. Fashions in color moved from dull beige to bright lemon, lime and tangerine. Then color swung back to the beiges, which were called "earth tones" the second time around. But, the news today is not how a carpet looks, although that's still important, but what it will do. How about a carpet that fights household odors, caused by bacterial growth, including odors from dogs and cats? Burlington Indus tries, the parent company of Lees Carpets, Monticello Carpet Mills, and Burlington House Carpets, has just come out with a whole collection of carpets--called Biofresh-- that do just that. Paul Letz, designer for the Burlington carpet group, ex plains how Biofresh carpets work. "An antifungal, antimicro bial, antibacterial agent is ap plied to the carpet during dyeing. As the dye soaks in, this chemical agent becomes permanently adhered to each fiber. "Odors are caused by the action of microbes in spilled milk or food. Biofresh carpets prevent microbes and bacteria from multiplying, so when the first generation dies, which might take hours, noth ing comes after. The odor goes away." Biofresh carpets are also treated with Scotchgard stain repeller , a much more famil iar carpet protector. Again, you can't see it, but it's there, forming a barrier against soil, spills, and static build-up. When speaking of stain-re sistance, Letz stresses the ab solute necessity for quick action to remove spills. Allow a spill time to set up on carpet yam, and you're in for trou ble. A protective finish such as Scotchgard makes an effec tive barrier to soiling, but timely, on-the-spot care will always be important. Biofresh carpets don't have to be renewed. Their odor protection is effective for the life of the carpet. They also Hmnt aCasfll MEMBER FDIC mi LENDER With Help From The First. There's also mucn that can be seen in new carpet fash ions. Colors have developed split personalities. Many solid color plushes come in as many as 25 hues, including beautiful variations of leather, cordovan, deep rust and terra cotta, all of which are in the height of fashion, according to Letz. On the other hand, the more casual textures, espe cially sculptured carpets, may be offered in fewer than ten shades, most of them browns and earth tones with rust and deep blue appearing as ac cents. ,V%V Bulbs we love to eat ©The family of bulb plants nas provided man with food, as well as beauty, since the be ginning of civilization. The bulbs we love to eat in clude onions, garlic, chives, leeks, shallots, potatoes, and sweet potatoes. In the South Pacific islands, the bulbous root of colocasia, known as elephant's ears or taro, is a food staple. Saffron, from the saffron crocus, is a distinctive seasoning prized by cooks: Egyptians grew iris to eat as an aphrodisiac and Europeans later used it as a breath de odorant.
