Lincoln Logs Ltd., in Chestertown, N.Y. "When utilized to its full est capacity, the new passive solar home--The Salem-- can virtually eliminate costs of heating and cooling," says Lincoln Lops president, Richard Considine. "We use die log, a highly energy-efficient building ma terial, to control solar heat, the mo6t economical kind of energy," Considine explains. Plame$ ̂ learth SPRING HOME IMPROVE MENT SPECIAL! "When fully solarized, the Salem will stay warm for three sunless days in a row-- relying on stored solar heat. "Logs insulate four times better than concrete block, six times better than brick, IS times better than stone. You'd need a five-foot-thick brick wall to provide as much natu ral insulation as an eight-inch passive solar Jhome does not rely on separate col lectors, storage units or me chanical equipment. When facing south for maximum exposure to the sun, a roof overhang and bal cony deflect summer sun rays without obstructing winter sunlight. Front-located double- glazed windows and sliding glass doors assure full entry of winter sun, resist air infiltra tion from outside, and prevent heat escape from inside. Thick nollow masonry in terior walls faced with bricks, stone, or other dark coating and a concrete floor--plus an underlying 14 x 16-foot rock bed--work together to ab sorb, store and radiate heat throughout daylight hours. When temperature drops after sunset, the masonrv wall, concrete floor and bed rock start releasing stored heat for night warmth. Lincoln Logs offers a va riety of rations to upgrade en ergy efficiency of the new model: insulation for walls, floors, ceilings, foundations that surpass minimum build ing code requirements in most sections of the U.S. "You can also add solar panels for hot water heating and install a fan in the ma sonry wall to pull rising hot air off die ceiling and recircu late it throughout the home," Considine explains. The do-it-yourself package for the two-story saltbox- style 40 x 30 feet Salem costs $19,255, and includes R-12 Adirondack White Pine dou- ble-tongue-and-groove logs, windows and doors, nails and spikes, caulking compound and between-log insulation, prefabricated roofing system, architectural blueprints. "With doubie-tongue-and- groove logs, do-it-yourselfers merely place logs one on top of another to erect the model within two weeks," Consi dine says. "The six steps of tradi tional building--framing, in sulating, exterior sheeting and siding, interior covering and finishing--are rolled into one step in log home con struction."
