PAGE 21 - PLAINDEALER - FJ RCH 2t. 1M roofing material for your home Have you examined your roof lately? If not, you may want to take a close look at it. If you see shingles that are cracking and curling, and spaces where shingles once secure have blown away, well, you need a new roof. And, don't delay. If you wait until water from a leaky roof stains your ceiling, you'll need to redecorate as well as reroof. There are several qualities you'll want in a roof and sev eral materials to choose from, including fiber glass based as phalt shingles from Johns- Manville Sales Corporation, a subsidiary of Manville Corporation. What to look for You'll want a roof that lasts, that is fire-resistant and economical. You'll want an attractive roof that blends well with the rest of your home's exterior. Since time is money, you'll want a roof that can be in stalled easily and quickly, whether you're going to hire a contractor or do it yourself. In short, you want the best roof for your money. . ' While wood shingles and shakes are often considered attractive and relatively long lasting, they are expensive and most lack fire-resistance. The combustibility of un treated wood roofs is of grow ing concern to homeowners and fire fighters, particularly in areas subject to hot dry spells. Things to consider Because blowing embers from brush fires often ignite wood roofs, some cities pro hibit the use of wood shingles and shakes in new construc tion and replacement roofing. Clay, cement and slate tiles --with their own traditional beauty--are highly fire-re sistant and durable. However, as they age and endure in creased exposure to the ele ments, they can become brittle and crack easily. They can also be quite expensive and, because they are very heavy, they require a much stronger support system. Conventional asphalt shingles are less expensive and can last approximately IS years. But, their organic card board base, made of wood chips and waste paper, is more flammable so the shingles provide only mini mal fire-resistance. Fiber glass shingles, devel oped by Johns-Manville, have all the qualities you're looking for: durability, fire- resistance, ease of installation and the rustic appearance of wood. They have an inorganic rot- resistant fiber glass base and are coated with weather-re sistant asphalt. What's more, this composition has earned the shingle an Underwriters Laboratories Class A fire- resistance rating, the highest attainable. Four different designs, all moderately priced and avail able in earthtone colors, offer you a wide and attractive choice. A building supply dealer or roofing contractor will gladly show you various samples and colors, and help you de termine how much material you need. RTE.31 - McHENRY, ILL. HOMEOWNERS WARMING UP TO ENERGY CONSERVATION Americans, who in the past have ignored the idea of sav ing energy in the home, are now warming to the idea. Steadily rising energy prices and the message of dol lar savings are prompting homeowners „to consider en ergy conserving home im provements today. "People realize that al though there is presently a pe troleum glut, the picture could change at any moment. "Faced with the eventuality of soaring energy bills many of the formerly apathetic are taking action now, believing that postponing action will cost more in the long run," says John Hammon, execu tive vice president of the Na tional Home Improvement Council. There is actually a great deal that homeowners can do themselves in the way of en ergy conservation. Caulking windows, weatherstripping, applying solar reflective film --even installing drapes, shades or shutters--can all decrease the energy needs of a home. For more intricate projects, the National Home Im provement Council suggests hiring a contractor.
