PAGE 4 - PLAINDEALLR - FRIDAY. MA < i jr., 1982 "EARL WALSH" So I Hear Listening to sports on a news report, I heard a voice in the background exclaim "Holy cow, holy cow!" That could only be Harry Caray. Sickening! How could he switch his allegiance and enthusiasm from years wtih the Sox to immediate infatuation with the Cubs? All that could come to my mind was "traitor". Maybe that is criticism in too strong a form. You don't suppose money had something to do with the switch, do you? If the Cubs should happen to move into Comiskey Park for the World Series, 01' 2 6-WEEK MEMBERSHIPS FOR s5000 IF YOU BRING IN YOUR TEAM JERSEY! r"cOUPON"CARD"j • M&M HEALTH AND FITNESS CENTER S 2908 W. Unless the Cubs have some sleepers in the ranks, one has to wonder about their pitching. Instead of the old question "Who's on first?", fans will ask "Who's on the mound?" Of course, they have Fergie Jenkins back, hoping he has his second wind. Where are the likes o' Charlie Root, Pat Malone, Guy Bush, Sherrif Blake and Milt Pappas? Some of those greats have gone to their eternal reward. They aren't forgotten. If you grew up in a small town, you will remember times when a team of horses ran away, hell-a-tearn' down the street. There were times when the team broke loose from the hitchin' posts and took off. Other times, a strange object called an automobile came chugging toward them and scared them out of their britchens. (You may not find that word in your dictionary. It was part of the harness.) A dog's life was a breeze. Not so for a horse. If the nag wasn't pulling a plow, it was a lightweight used for hauling the milk to the factory. If a farmer delivered the milk and then decided to tie his team to a hitching rail while he stopped in a saloon to wet his whistle, the time sometimes got away. That's when the team got restless and pawed holes in the earth. Of course, there were WHALE'S TAIL tyffA OPEN WEEKDAYS AT 11:00 AM SAT. BROWN, p.c 666 W. Jackson, Woodstock, 338-0107 some fancy-stepping horses which were pampered and used for show. Snowmobiles racing on Fox River never gave me the thrill of watching sharp-shod horses hitched to cutters and racing for prizes or money. Owners drove their own horses, unlike running races where lfght-weight jockeys are hoisted into saddles. Days are getting longer and geese are honking their way north. It must be spring. If this country needs anything worse than a good 5-cent cigar, it is a plan for flood control. Since we meet "B" Nuziard and her sister Mary so many times in different restaurants, the question before the house is who is following whom. Met part of the Busse family from South Barreville Road and Bally O'Greg and hope to visit the entire family when the sun gets higher. The Barreville Road (Irish Prairie) farm is where I spent many happy days with my Grandma. I thought Jim Freund, Major-do-mo of the famous Longhorn restaurant, was in hiding since the Cubs flopped last season. He came out of the kitchen last week--all smiles. Must be he sees better days ahead at Wrigley Field. Some preach that money isn't everything, but must admit it is something. It is handy to have when you go shopping. Ringwood News CONSUMER ^CHECKLIST Doris Low Katy Christopher 653-9262 385-8037 Is Sewing A Saving? Research indicates that people feel that they save from 33 to 75 percent by making their own clothing. A good sale can often bring the price of ready-to-wear down below sewing costs. Add time and materi: als to see if sewing makes sense to you. Hard-to-fit consumers may find it more prac tical to sew rather than shop and do extensive fitting. Rummage Sale Starts Today The Ringwood church will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today to give folks an op portunity to find bargains at its rummage sale. Tomorrow, March 27, the sale hours are9 a.m. to noon. Coffee "and" will be served Friday morning. CELEBRIS • BIRTHDAY " * i • , Friday, March 12, was a busy and happy day for Michael Daurio when he celebrated his fifth birthday. After a picture-taking session, he^had breakfast out with some of his family. Later in the day, his grand parents stopped by to wish him a "Happy Birthday'.' His sister, Michelle, helped in decorating the house with a Popeye theme. There was even a Popeye birthday cake to share with some of his classmates and neighbors. There were gifts for Michael and everyone en joyed playing games. Many more happy birthdays to you, Michael.
