The tournament, played at North junior high school in Crystal Lake, lasted the entire weekend with the championship game being played on Sunday. The Montini Mustangs finished their regular season schedule with an un­ blemished 7-0 record and extended that mark to 9-0 during tournament play. They captured both the season and the tournament championships along the way. But while Kiernan, a returning state player and now only a junior firmly has the number one singles position locked up at Johnsburg high school, coach Denny Spraetz is most concerned about making his doubles team strofig. 'Many teams stock up on their singles players," said Spraetz. "But we'd like to load up on our doubles teams. If we can make them strong we'll be a much better team." That is not to say, however, that the singles players won't be con­ tributing also, particularly Kiernan. "He's playing well right now and he'll be strong for us," said Spraetz of his top singles player. "He's more aggressive this year, that's what he needed to do." Kiernan is also one of seven returning lettermen and one of 22 players that will give Spraetz plenty to choose from in selecting his varsity positions. Spraetz noted that the turnout of players was one of the best ever at Johnsburg. The other returning let­ termen for the Skyhawks include seniors Bob Stanell, Louie Koenigseder, Gene Weincouff, and Steve Switzer. John Hendrixson is the other returning junior, while brother Paul is a sophomore. Spraetz indicated that Stanell is one of the leading candidates for the number two singles spot, but noted that number three singles and the two doubles teams are still up for grabs. John Hendrixson was a possible candidate for the number one Roubles tandem, but a freak car accident has left him out of action until perhaps the end of April, said Spraetz. His partner might have been younger brother Paul, but now that possibility won't exist until after half of the season is over. "It'll be a time to mix and match," he said "We'll shuffle the players around to see how the players get along with each other." Junior Skyhawks vying for a spot on the team include Jeff Jurik, Steve Knight, Larry Zuley, Tom Reese, and Kerry Ridout, while sophomores include Rich Michaels. Mike Gill, Jason Anderson, and Sean Clark. Freshmen hopefuls in­ clude Ralph Stark, Jim Tatro, Ray Tortillo, Bob Slack, Rob Kreetzschmar, and Jim Owen. "It's nice to back," said Spraetz, who coached the team during Johnsburg's first two years then took a year off. "I'm really looking forward to this season. "I think we have some fine individual talent," he added. "But the key will be to get the kids to play together and to come together as a team."
