The Knights of Columbus intend to take positive steps to help upgrade the quality of television on the three major networks and to play a part in stemming the flow of unwarranted violence, profanity, gratuitous sex and blasphemy over the air waves. Based on reports from a monitoring program presently under way at local councils called Action for Responsible Television, the 1.35 million Catholic fraternal society's in ternational office in New Haven will distribute to all councils lists of those ad vertisers who consistently sponsor enriching programs, as well as those advertisers who participate in the greatest number of offensive programs. Next September a decision will be made as to whether or not the order will suggest avoidance of products of those advertisers who consistently participate in programming deleterious to society. This action is based on a resolution passed at the society's 1981 international meeting in Louisville urging all executives and TV program directors of net works and local stations to e l i m i n a t e u n w a r r a n t e d v i o l e n c e , p r o f a n i t y , gratuitous sex, sacrilege and blasphemy from the air waves. "The Knights of Columbus are not seeking censorship, nor attempting to impose their particular values on anyone else," Supreme Director Robert J. Hisel of Kankakee is quick to point out. Hisel is one of 21 members of the board of directors supervising the operations of the Knights of Columbus. "However, the K of C and their families are part of the general public that owns the airwaves and TV stations are granted licenses to use those airwaves in the public interest. "As a substantial part of that public," Hisel adds, "we and our families and other like-minded citizens have the right and responsibility to voice our praise or protest and to take effective action for responsible television now - before our values are totally eroded." A . - - T h e A m e r i c a n V e t e r i n a r y M e d i c a l association reports that Parvovirus is under control across the country because of the massive vaccination program last year. We get fleas in our house and they're very bad on the poor dog. -• P.MM. A. - the flea pill is available on prescription from your veterinarian. Generally, the dosage is one pill every three days depending on the size and weight of your dog. Using this pill will keep fleas off your dog and out of your house. Q. - I have heard rumors that dogs will not be allowed in state parks this year. Can you tell me if this is true? ~ B.D.D. A. - Dogs will again be allowed in Illinois State parks this year but must be kept on leashes. As in the past, pets may not be per mitted in the lodges or other facilities...seeing eye dogs are excepted. Q. - How old does a parakeet have to be before you can determine the sex? - - A.J.D. A. - You generally can tell the sex of a parakeet at age two to three months. By that time the male will have developed a blue strip just above his beak. However, if your bird is very light colored the blue may be very pale, making it hard for you to determine his sex. Do you have a question about your pet and his care? HOLISTIC DENTAL CARE Last month we touched on the point of holistic health being optimal health for each individual. Holistic oriented dentists strive to recognize the individuality of each person. The primary question asked is, "What is happening in this person's body that is allowing the disease state we see in the mouth?". For dental treatment to be more effective than temporary treatment, more than the local factors of the disease condition must be treated. Most dental problems have a systemic (total body) factor(s) in addition to the local causes. For instance, Pyorrhea is a disease which has several factors both local and systemic which play a part. Local factors will in clude inadequate brushing and flossing, incorrect biting (either incorrect jaw relationships or incorrect biting habits), inadequate fillings (silver fillings too big, or excess silver pushing on the gums). Some systemic factors might include hypoglycemia, low thyroid function, inadequate levels of vitamin C. potassium or zinc. Very often we "get by" with sym ptomatic treatment which usually treats only the observable local factors: better treatment looks at all the factors involved in the disease condition. As can be seen from this example, an examination of the mouth that is to be oriented toward prevention must begin completely outside the mouth. If we are going to learn enough about holistic health to be effective preventers, the body must be considered as a single inter-related unit of function. These articles are intended to help you better understand Dentistry as it relates to your total health THE NORTHERN FOX DENTAL ASSOCIATES will feature articles on the most current trends in Dentistry.
