Boy Scouts Complete '82 Opportunity Days Young men from 28 McHenry county Boy Scout troops and Explorer posts have just completed their eighth annual merit badge opportunity days. The 311 Scouts and Explorers par ticipated in this area's largest career exploration program on three Saturdays, March 13, 20 and 27. Adult Merit Badge counselors aided the Scouts to explore 43 subjects of their own choice, ranging from Art to Woodworking. Almost 900 merit badges were earned by the hard working young men in the three-week opportunity seminar. The 43 counseling sessions were conducted by leading experts in a wide variety of subjects such as Atomic Energy, Computers, Space Exploration, Journalism, P h o t o g r a p h y , C o m munications, Physical Fitness, Indian Lore, Safety, and First Aid. A total of 78 Counselors and Scout Leaders worked with the 311 participants in the directive counseling sessions at Cary Grove high school, where Assistant Principal William Moylan coordinated the physical facilities. K i s h w a u k e e d i s t r i c t , Blackhawk Area council, Boy Scouts of America, sponsored the unique event. District Chairman Richard McDowell, a school ad ministrator in District 47, explained the highly suc cessful outcome. "In our modern society, career interests and opportunities are as varied as they are specialized and, sometimes, complicated. Through this Merit Badge program, we enable a Scout to explore and experience the intricacies of various interest areas with an expert Counselor in each subject to provide practical and candid guidance. by Karen Boettcher Even though this column discusses mainly dogs and cats, the welfare of smaller pets is also the concern of Helping Pws. Since a small animal such as a gerbil or hamster will spend most of its life in a cage, great care should be taken to insure that the cage will adequately meet its needs. Many companies manufacture cages which are much too small for any small mammal - just because a cage is advertised with a picture of a particular animal using it, the buyer shouldn't automatically assume that the cage is appropriate for that animal. A cage should provide plenty of room for exercise and for separate sleeping, eating, and toilet areas. It should be large enough that the entire cage won't be soaked by a leaky water bottle. A good rule for the con scientious pet owner to follow is: if in doubt, always buy the larger cage! All pet adoptions must be validated by the signing of a contract along with the adoption fee which includes the cost of the spay or neuter surgery from a vet of HP's choice, or a deduction from the cost of the surgery if done by a vet of your choice.
