Johnsburg "9" Blanked At Cary 8-0 PAGE 7 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, APRIL7,1982 • wgmm CARY -- The Johnsburg high school baseball team opened up its 1962 season with an 8-0 non-conference loss to Cary-Grove last Wednesday at Cary. Trouble began for the Skyhawks before the game even began. Tom Pieper, a returning All-SHARK out fielder and expectant lead- off hitter, stepped in a hole and sprained his ankle during warm-up drills. Johnsburg coach Jim Meyers called for John Mredzianowski to fill in for Pieper moments before the game got underway. - In the first inning, Trojan pitcher Mark Hoggard struck out two of the first five men he faced, which was to be a preludeJor the rest of the game. Skyhawk senior Rob Piesert managed a single in the first inning, but was left stranded on base, as all of his teammates were that night. Hoggard led off the Cary- Grove first with a walk and stole second base after Johnsburg pitcher Larry "tfoagy" Dix got Bob Dhaens to fly out. Lynn thai hit a grounder to Mike Leon at third base, and with help from shortstop Piesert and second baseman Dale Zalke, Hoggard was trapped in a run-down and was putout. Reaching on a fielder's choice, Lynn also proceeded to steal second base. With two outs, Christiansen hit a shot into right field for a single but Lynn was cut down trying to score on a Boylan Tops Marian Boys ROCKFORD-Rockford X Boylan scored four runs in the first two innings and added four more in the late going to defeat Marian Central's baseball team 8-1 in its season opener Thur sday. Senior right-handei" Don Rickert suffered the loss for the Hurricanes as he gave up 11 hits, six walks, while striking out four batters. He was also victimized by loose support from his teammates who committed several errors during the contest. Marian scored its only run in the top of the sixth inning after Boylan had posted a 6- 0 lead. Tom Schermerhorn, John Seaver. and Rich Kelly each had one hit for the ricanes, now 0-1. an will host Elgin St. d on Wednesday, April 7, then visit Crystal Lake South on Thursday. Johnsburg didn't get another hit until the top of the fourth inning when Zalke singled, stole second and third, but was left stranded. As solid as the Skyhawks were on defense in the first inning, they looked like a different team the remainder of the game. McClellan led off the second inning with a double, advanced to third on a fielder's choice, and scored on an error for Cary-Grove's first run. In the third inning, another Skyhawk error and two base hits produced two more runs and gave the Trojans a 3-0 lead. Williams replaced Dix on the mound in the bottom of the fifth and threw well, but four more errors in that inning resulted in four more runs for the Trojans. Johnsburg collected its third and final hit of the game in the top of the sixth inning when John Nett pinch hit for Joe Meyers and lined a single into center field. But he was erased one batter later on a double play ball. In the bottom of the sixth, another Skyhawk error gave the Trojans their final run. Johnsburg again mounted a scoring threat in the seventh inning as Hurckes reached on an error and John Tatro walked with one out. But Jeff Fowler hit into a fielder's choice and Mied- zianowski then struck out to end to game. Strikeouts were the Skyhawks' prime nemises as Hoggard recorded 14 whiffs in his complete game, and fanning at least each Johnsburg starter once. Dix suffered the loss. "Fourteen strikeouts make it a little tough," said Meyers. "We had people in scoring position several times, but wfCdidn't come through when we clutch hit." Six Skyfiawk players got as far as second base, but no further. Commenting on Dix's first pitching' assignment, Meyers said, "He got behind too many hitters. He didn't have the control he needs to have, but you might expect that in a first game. "We lost as a team, you can't blame one player\> There were a great deal of errors." All of the Cary- Grove runs were unearned. The Skyhawks will travel to Crystal Lake South on Wednesday, April 7 for a 4:00 p.m. game before returning to Johnsburg for a 4:30 p.m. home game against Lake Zurich on Thursday, April 8.
