VA Administrator Robert P. Nimmo said the scholarships will go to about 300 qualified nursing students. The scholarships will provide educational benefits on a pay-back-in- service basis. In return for each year of, the scholarship -- which provides tuition, educational expenses and a monthly stipend - participants will agree to serve a minimum of two years as a full-time nurse in facilities of the VA's health care system. The VA operates 172 hospitals and 226 outpatient clinics around the country. It employs some 30,000 nurses. The initial scholarship will be for one year, with an option to renew or for two year! depending on the availability of future ap propriations for the program. Applications are now being sought for the school term to begin in the fall of 1962. Approximately 90 per cent will go to un dergraduate students, and the balance to master's candidates who already are registered nurses, Nimmo noted. Primary consideration will be given to third and fourth year baccalaureate nursing students and master's degree candidates in clinical nursing specialties needed by the VA - gerontology, medical- surgical, adult psychiatric- mental health, and rehabilitation. Applications for the scholarships and in formation about the program are available from VA Health Professional Scholarship Program, Office of Academic Affairs, DM&S (14N), 810 Vermont Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20420. Spring Time Dangers Each spring, millions of homeowners unknowingly leave potential bombs a- round their homes, warns a fire protection specialist. The danger comes from gas oline tanks on lawn mowers and the containers used to store fuel for dozens of gas- o l i n e - p o w e r e d t o o l s , appliances and recreational toys. These potentially ex plosive materials around the house create * major source of fire, death and property loss each year. H o m e o w n e r s i n v a r i a b l y store gasoline in the garage -- usually attached to the house -- where pilot lights on water heaters can easily ignite vapors from leaking tanks or containers. f
