McHenry had its first quadrangular meet snowed out last Saturday, but the weather appears to be favorable for this weekend's event. Other competing teams include Johnsburg with state returnee Dan Kiernan at number one singles, Marengo, and North Chicago. On Tuesday, April 20, the Warriors will face probably their biggest challenge of the season when they travel to Crystal Lake South for a 4:30 p.m. match. Carl Moesche McHENRY -- You have to give Doug Mullen credit. After being rocked for three quick runs in the first inning by cross-town rival Johnsburg, the McHenry senior settled down to pitch the Warriors to their second straight win of the season Tuesday night. McHenry won 8-3. "I thought Doug did a super job once he got past the first inning," said McHenry coach Bian Wilson. "I think he also learned that he has to warm up properly before he starts a game. He may not have given himself enough time." But that's a problem that should work itself out in as he gains more pitching experience. Afterall, this was only Mullen's second game since his freshman year and his first on the mound. After being shut out in their season opener at Cary- Grove, Johnsburg wasted little time in scoring their first runs of the season. Jeff Fowler led off the game with a sharp single to centerfield on Mullen's first offering, then Rob Peisert followed by slapping a hard hit ground ball that Warrior second baseman Mike Bauml bobbled for an error. With runners on first and second and no outs, Joe Meyers pulverized Mullen's first pitch deep into right centerfield, out onto the cinder track for a prodigous three-run homer. After four pitches, Johnsburg led 3-0. But Mullen pulled himself together, struck out the nqxt three batters to retire the side, and blanked the Skyhawks on two hits the remainder of the contest In the bottom of the first inning, McHenry got one of those runs back as Dave Smith drew a walk off Johnsburg pitcher Larry "Hoagy" Dix with two outs and designated hitter Tim Evans followed with a long run-scoring double to left field. After Mullen retired the side in order in the top of the second frame, his team mates quickly went to work and tied up the game in the bottom half of the innipg. • Fritz Larsen led off trith a base oh balls and wafc ad-: vanced to second on a per fectly executed sacrifice by Mike Dillon. After Dave Williams struck out, Bauml redeemed his first inning miscue with a base hit sending Larsen to third. Wilson then called for the double steal As Bauml was jockeying between first and second in a rundown, Larsen made his break for home and the throw to catcher Dan Williams was too late. I^arsen had his stolen base and so did Bauml who wound up at second. Tore Sivertsen followed with a solid single to leftfield scoring Bauml who beat the throw to the plate. Smith then grounded out ending the inning. McHenry went ahead to stay in the bottom of the fourth as again Larsen got matters going by walking to lead off the frame. Dillon followed with a single, and Williams did the |same to load the bases with no outs. Bauml then wrapped out the second of his three hits off Dix to score Larsen with what proved to be the win ning run. Sivertsen followed by chopping a ground ball to third, but the attempted force out throw to home hit Dillon in the back. Two runs scored on the play with Bauml moving to third. He then scored the fourth run of the inning as Smith delivered a sacrifice fly to left. In the sixth, Meyers got the first Johnsburg hit off Mullen since his first inning home run by singling to right with one out. Dan Williams followed with a single to left and the Skyhawks had their rally going. But Mark Hiller popped up to Sivertsen at third, and Scott Zalke's apparent hit to right became an acrobatic inning .ending out as Larsen slid along the ground to make the catch.' wThat catch really hurt us," said Johnsburg coach Jim Meyers. "That one and the one on Fowler's line shot in the third was the dif ference in the game." McHenry collected its final run in the bottom of the sixth. Williams walked with one out, advanced on a Bauml base hit, and scored on Smith's single through the infield. Mullen put down the Skyhawks in order in the seventh frame including two via strikeout to record his complete game victory. Mullen finished with nine whiffs in his seven innings of work and allowed only four hits and three walks. Dix went the distance for Johnsburg allowing nine hits and four walks, while striking out two. After opening Fox Valley conference competition on Wednesday against Jacobs, McHenry (2-0) will host last year's conference chaftipion Crystal Lake South on Friday, April 16 in a 4:30 p.m. game at McCracken field. Johnsburg (0-2) will make up a eame with Richmond- Burton on Thursday, *then travel to Grayslake on Tuesday, April 20 for another non-conference contest. .* Carl Moesche .. Coach Don Seaton's Warriors captured nine of the 15 events including all three of the relays to win easily. "We didn't have all of our runners, but then neither did they," said Seaton. "But our kids ran well and it's a good start for us." Junior Terri Blume led the Warrior girls with three place performances. In dividually, she won the 400 meter dash with a time of 66 4 seconds, and she teamed up to help capture a pair of relay events, the 800 meters and also the 1600. Tracey Brechel also assisted in the scoring as she ran on all three of the win ning relay teams. Junior Angela Anderson, McHenry's school record- holder in both the 100 and the 200 meter low hurdles, didn't eclipse any of her school marks, but she did win both events with times of 19.36 and 37.18, respectively. Sophomore captain Delia Saunders also was a double winner capturing the 1600 meters in 5:59.6 and running on the winning 1600 relay team. •• Of McHenry'S Olfifor firstSw p l a c e f i n i s h e r s , j u n i o r K e l l y ' Sue Thomas came within six feet of her school record in the discus with a heave of 89- feet 0-inches.
