IM2 White Fires No Hitter; Rockets Zap Skyhawks 7-0 JOHNSBURG -- Rich mond-Burton's Mike White threw a six inning no-hitter and his teammates sup ported him with 14 hits as the visiting Rockets blanked host Johns burg 7-0 Wed nesday night at Tiger field. For White, a junior right hander, it was a near perfect performance as only Jeff Fowler, who led off the bottom of the first inning by reaching on an error, was able to get on. White issued no walks and he recorded only three strikeouts, but he put down the next 18 Johnsburg hitters in a row to accomplish his feat. "We hit the ball well," said Johnsburg coach Jim Meyers But we couldn't get anything to get through the infield or to drop. It seemed like they had six infielders against us. "But when they hit the ball it was dropping in there for them. It was just one of those games," he said Scott Jones and David Brantley led the Rocket offense with three hits each. Jones' performance in cluded a pair of runs batted in and Brantley's included a pair of doubles and an RBI Paul Miller added a 2-for-2 day with as many RBI's and Craig Komar also had a pair of hits including a double Dan Williams suffered the defeat for the Skyhawks in his first starting assignment of the year The senior right hander went three innngs and allowed four earned runs and eight hits before being relieved by Rob Peisert Johnsburg, now 0-3, will travel to Harvard on Wed nesday for their SHARK conference opener, then host Marengo on Thursday and Round Lake on Friday. Coach Gary Gray's netters swept past their quadrangular competition at West Campus on a windy, rainy Saturday afternoon and earlier blanked the Sabres at Stream wood 5-0 to keep their record un blemished. McHenry is now 6-0. At the quadrangular, the Warriors captured four of the six singles matches, tied a fifth, won one of the three doubles matches, and tied a second match there to pull away from the competition. McHenry finished first in the competition with 32 points followed by North Chicago, second with 24; Marengo, third with 19; and Johnsburg fourth with 15. The only singles com petition that the Warriors didn't win was in number three where Marengo's Tom Casey took the title. In the number one spot, McHenry junior Scott Rhode tied North Chicago's Bob Shaffer for the title. Rhode lost his opening bout 3-7, but came back strong to win a pair of 7-3, 7-3 decisions including a victory over Johnsburg's state returnee Dan Kiernan. The remainder of the singles matches easily belonged to the Warriors. In the number two spot, senior Randy Glick waltzed through his three matches winning 7-3, 10-0, 7-3. At number four singles, junior Brad Salman also swept his series 10-0, 6-4, 8-2, while junior Chris Stumbris had the easiest time of all at number five winning all three matches by identical 10-0 whitewashings. Senior Ed Donohue finished off the singles play for McHenry with scores of 10-0, 8-2, and 10-0 which all but wrapped up the quad win. In the doubles com petition, Kiernan teamed up with John Hendrixson to capture the number one spot by scores of 9-1, 7-3, and 6-4 over McHenry's tandem of Donohue-S. Rhode who finished second. In the number two doubles match, the Warrior team of Glick-Burgess hooked up to sweep the field 9-1,100,10-0. The number three team of Salman-T. Rhode wound up in a tie with North Chicago's Tracey Pierson and Dave Lynam for first place. At Streamwood last Wednesday, the Warriors were again every bit as impressive as they won their third straight match via shut out. Todd Rhode played his first match of the season at number one singles and took care of Bill McGowan in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. In the number two spot. Salman defeated Mark Miller in straight sets 6-2, 6- 2, while Stumbris blanked Eloy Diaz also in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. In number one doubles, Donohue, who had played his first two doubles matches of the year with Stumbris, teamed up with Scott Rhode for a winning combination. The tandem downed the Sabres' Steve Menard and Bob Tolewtino in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. Burgess, who had played his first two doubles matches with Salman, also found his first time partner, Glick, to be a successful transition. The duo downed Scott Weidenfeld and Jeff Hunter 6-2, 6-1. The Warriors will take their undefeated record to Crystal Lake South on Tuesday, then continue Fox Valley conference play on Thursday, April 22 when they host Woodstock. Both matches are slated for 4:30 p.m. Carl Moesche Warrior Girls Win Second Straight Track Meet FOX LAKE - McHenry high school's girls track team won its second straight dual meet of the season Thursday night defeating host Grant 82-46. Skyhawk Softballers Split The Johnsburg H.S girls softball team began its 1982 season last week by drop ping a 11-8 contest to Grant, but then coming back to handle Richmond-Burton 19- 4. Against the Bulldogs, Skyhawk pitcher Michelle Swartzloff had a shaky debut on the mound issueing 12 walks which led to many runs. The sophomore hurler gave up only six hits, but the two home runs she allowed (one a three-run homer, the other a two-run round tripper) aided in the Grant victory. Johnsburg was led by senior shortstop Janice Sch- mitt who socked out three singles in her four at bats. She also had a pair of runs batted in and two stolen bases to top the Skyhawk offense. Tammy Irwin recorded the victory for Grant. But against Richmond, Johnsburg looked like a totally different team as it notched its first win of the season Senior Dawn Haynie turned in a superb pitching performance for the Skyhawks as she twirled a no-hitter through the first three innings of play. In the fourth frame, the Rockets reached her for four runs on five hits, but she kept in control of the game to pick up the victory. Richmond didn't get to bat after the fifth inning because of the 10- run slaughter rule. Offensively, Johnsburg scored its 19 runs on only seven hits but made the most of the 13 walks it was issued. The Skyhawks also added six stolen bases to the attack. Top Individual per formances were turned in by Haynie and junior Cindy Guetzloff who each went 3- for-4 Schmitt again led the team in stolen bases with three Haynie recorded the first win of the season for Johnsburg, while Wiltberger took the loss for Richmond. Scott McClory Plaindealer Warriors Drop FVC Opener McHENRY -- Some things just aren't to be. For McHenry's baseball team it meant winning their Fox Valley conference opener, and for pitcher Dave Smith it meant his no-hitter. After notching victories in their first two games of the season, the Warriors dropped their FVC opener 3- 2 to Jacobs Wednesday night. But while the defeat was a bitter pill to swallow for McHenry coach Brian Wilson who saw his team squander away a 2-0 lead, it was an even more heart breaking loss for Smith who flurted with a no-hitter for four and one-third innings. Smith, a senior righthander who suffered the defeat to even his record at 1-1, looked invincible through the first four innings allowing only two Golden Eagles to reach base. Joe Majeski walked to lead off the game and was bunted over to second by Mark Sume. A Smith wild pitch sent him to third, but he got no further as John Scime grounded out and Rich Olsen whiffed. Smith then retired the Jacobs hitters in order in both the second and third innings and disposed of the first two batters in the fourth for 11 in a row before walking Olsen on his second at bat. Olsen then stole second base, but died there as Smith whirled and picked him off with shortstop Dave Williams making the put out. FINALLY, SPRING IS HERE! After Mike Bauml flied out to right field to open the game, Tore Sivertsen followed with an opposite field, wind blown triple. After Smith popped up to third, Tim Evans delivered a two-out single to give McHenry a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the second inning, Fritz Larsen led off with a walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a passed ball. After a pair of strikeouts, Williams also walked and stole second, then Bauml scored Larsen as his ground ball was booted by the Jacobs third baseman for an error. But the momentum quickly changed as Eberly didn't allow another McHenry runner past second base, while Smith's control got him in trouble in the fifth. Randy Jolitz flied out to center field to lead off that inning. But pinch hitter Andy Grau walked, Don Wright reached on an error, and Jeff Brock walked to load the bases. Smith worked the count to one ball and two strikes to Eberly, the ninth man in the order, but then with the runners moving on the pitch, the Jacobs batter stuck his bat out and lined a single over Williams' outstretched glove and suddenly the no- hitter was gone and the game was tied. Smith worked his way out of further damage in the inning, but got himself in trouble in the sixth as he again walked Olsen. Olsen again stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored two batters later as Andy Grau laid down a perfectly executed suicide squueze for the winning run. With the game to be concluded after six innings due to darkness, the Warriors managed to get the tying run on base ami into scoring position as Mike Dillon reached on an error and stole second base. But Williams then became Eberly's seventh strike out victim which ended the game. Smith finished with six strike outs and as many walks in his 5-plus innings of work, while Eberly allowed only four hits and as many walks against him in picking up the win. After the first inning, McHenry managed only two more singles, one by Dillon in the fourth and one by Smith in the fifth. But Dillon was thrown out stealing and Smith was left stranded. The Warriors left seven runners on base for the game. McHenry's contest with Crystal Lake South was postponed Friday due to rain and was rescheduled for Monday. The Warriors will have a busy week as they play at Grant Tuesday, then travel to Woodstock on Wednesday.
