He won two Chicago-area Emmys during his seven- and-a-half years there. But he joined ESPN in February 1981 because he says the network is "really there for the sports nut. "I'm glad, because I have always been crazy about sports myself. On other stations the local newscast gave three min utes to sports. It used to drive me crazy. I was nev er able to give the details I wanted to. "On the networks, you're fighting for air time. At WMAQ, I did a three- minute sportscast, but if someone was shot in Texas, I was down to two- and-a-half minutes."
