STAFF PHOTO -- WAYNE GAYLOHD Johnsburg Boys Win First Warrior "9" Falls Below .500 Mark The McHenry high school baseball team dropped a pair of games this week to fall below the 300 mark for the first time this season. The Warriors dropped a 11-3 six inning contest against Fox Valley con ference foe Crystal Lake South at McCracken field Monday night, then lost a 8-4 decision at Grant on Tuesday that was called because of the cold weather after the fifth Now 0-2 in the FVC and 2-3 overall, McHenry will hope to bounce back this W eekend when it plays host to Cary- Grove in a 10:30 a rii doubleheader at McCracken field On Monday night, junior right-hander Mike Bauml started on the mound for the Warriors, but the Gators didn t make his pitching debut one to remember. Crystal Lake South began its first inning in the rain with two singles, a base on balls, a McHenry error, and two Bauml wild pitches to quickly take a 3-0 lead. The big blow of the inning was a two-out two-run single by Butch Witt Bauml escaped the second inning without any trouble, but never got out of the third Chris Kelly walked to open the inning and scored on Ed Kothera's triple 'the first of his two triples) Rick Dollahan then brought him home with a sharp single to left field which knocked Bauml out of the game Right-hander Dan Long came in off the bench to pitch for the Warriors, but the Gators continued their hitting spree Before the final out of the inning was recorded. South had sent 12 men to bat, had added three more runs on four hits, and now led 8-0 McHenry, meanwhile, had been silenced by Kelly as he yielded only a walk to Tore Sivertsen in the first inning and a single by Tim Evans in the second But in the third inning, the Warrior attack came to life Mike Dillon led off with a single and promptly stole second base After a strikeout. Bauml singled for the first Warrior run Sivertsen followed with a walk, then Dave Smith delivered a long opposite field double to left which scored Bauml and put Sivertsen on third. Evans then collected his second straight hit with a double into right-center scoring Sivertsen. But that was all McHenry would get as both Smith and Evans were left stranded as the next two batters grounded out. Long worked the fourth inning allowing two more runs on two hits and an error, before giving way to Dillon who pitched the final two frames The third Warrior pitcher gave up Kothera'§ second run-scoring triple in the fifth, but turned in a credible relief performance by blanking the Gators in the sixth. The Warriors, however, didn't get another runner past first base as South reliever Dave Meyer was untouchable except for the two base hits from John Huff. The Warriors finished with seven hits in the con test, but the Gators paced by Mike Geske's 3-foM and Kothera's two straight hits, collected 14 On Tuesday, McHenry played on probably its best diamond to date when it traveled to Grant, but ironically committed a season high six errors which led to defeat The Warriors went three up and three down against Bulldog hurler Mark Wet- terquist in the first three innings before finally scoring in the top of the fourth Bauml and Sivertsen opened the inning with solid singles against a biting wind, and Smith w alked to load the bases Evans forced in a run by also walking, then against the second Grant pitcher Huff also collected a RBI with a free pass Smith scored the third run of the inning on a passed ball, and Fritz Larsen's ground out brought home Evans with the final Warrior run But before the Warriors got their bats moving. Grant had staked Wetterquist to a 7-0 lead on six hits off McHenry starter Evans and six miscues by his team mates. At that time the umpires had contemplated calling the game off due to cold tem peratures, but decided not to do so. But after the Warriors had batted in the fifth and were back in the game trailing 8-4, the game was ended as the umpires had ruled that it was too cold to continue. Although both teams were intent on continueing, they were not given the op portunity as the game was ruled complete after 4'2 GRAYSLAKE - Rob Peisert had his first starting pitching assignment in over a year and it couldn't have come at a better time as Johns burg's baseball team defeated Grayslake 8-3 on a cold Tuesday afternoon. Piesert, a senior right hander, limited the host Rams to three runs while scattering six hits as the Skyhawks notched their initial win of the season after three tries. "He pitched a good ballgame for us," said Johnsburg coach Jim Meyers. "He got stronger as the game went on and after the third inning didn't allow a runner past second base." Piesert gave up a single run in each of the first three innings, but Johnsburg never trailed in the contest and was never threatened. Piesert struck out two, while walking three in his outing. He also got defensive support from his teammates as the Skyhawks committed only one error in the contest and were credited with 11 assists. "The defense did pretty well," Meyers added. And while the defense was holding Grayslake back, the Johnsburg offense came to life and scored its biggest output of the season while collecting eight hits. The Skyhawks wasted little time in scoring as Jeff Fowler and Tom Pieper both walked and stole second in the top of the first inning, then were both brought home on a Joe Meyers single. Meyers then scored the third run of the inning on a wild pitch. Tom Huemann scored what proved to be the win ning run in the top of the second as he reached on a walk, stole second, and scored as Fowler's sacrifice bunt which was thrown away for an error by the Grayslake catcher. After stealing second and third, Fowler scored as Meyers hit a sacrifice fly to left. In the third inning, John Nett scored the sixth run of the game as he singled, was sacrificed to second by Mike Leon, and scored on Fowler's single. Pieper scored the final two runs of the game as he crossed the plate in both the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, he singled and stole second, advanced on Meyers' base hit, and scored fivo outs later on an error. Pieper then scored his third run of the game in the fifth inning as he walked, again stole second, and scored on Meyers' third hit of the contest. Meyers finished with a 3- for-3 performance which included four RBI's, while Fowler went 2-for-3 and had four stolen bases. Pieper, who missed the first two games of the season because of illness, singled in his only at bat, walked three times, scored three runs, and also had four stolen bases. All told, the Skyhawks committed 11 thefts. Carl Moesche Saunders Paces Track Team innings. Carl Moesche Johnsburg Girls Lose 6-4 H'S SPRING PRICES tiOM ALL BATS. The non-conference loss dropped the Skyhawks' record to 1-2. They have yet to play a SHARK conference game. Sophomore Kathy Butler made her first start of the year for Johnsburg and was tagged for four runs on three hits in the first inning, as the Bulldogs took an early lead. The Skyhawks came back in their half of the inning, however, and scored three runs of their own to slice the lead to 4-3. Then in the bottom of the second, Johnsburg knotted the score on some daring baserunning by Patti Bart- mann. The junior Skyhawk reached base on a walk, proceeded to steal second and third, and finally home which tied the game at four all. The Bulldogs scored the winning runs in the top of the third inning after a two singles, a stolen base, and a fielders choice. Johnsburg had a golden opportunity to do some damage in its half of the third by receiving three walks to load the bases. But unfortunately it failed to score as all three outs were made by strikeouts. Butler held Wauconda scoreless in both the fourth and the fifth innings, but the Skyhawks could not get her the runs back Johnsburg went three up and three down in the fourth, but made a last ditch effort in its last chance to bat. Diane Heard walked with one out, amT^dvanced to third on a single^b^Cindy Guetzloff. With runnefrSvat the corners, Bartmann dreV a base on balls which loadt the bases for Tracey Esposito. But Esposito flied out for the second out and the runners were held up. Janice Schmitt then hit a bullet right into the Wauconda pitcher's mitt which ended the game. The Skyhawks had only two hits for the game, both coming from Guetzloff who was 2-for-3. Johnsburg will travel to Marengo on Friday, April 23 to play the Indians in a SHARK conference game. Scott McClory WOODSTOCK - Delia Saunders captured two in dividual events and ran on the winning 1600 meter relay team, but those were the only firsts that th6 MCflfchry girls track team brought back from a Monday triangular meet at Wood stock. The host Blue Streaks won their outdoor opener by scoring 87 points to Cary- Grove's 45'^, and McHenry's 314. Saunders, McHenry's sophomore captain, began the day by winning the 800 meters in 2:31.9 to edge out teammate Donna DeVenecia who was runner-up at 2:34.3.
