Now this is a land of frequent earthquakes. There was one (5.8 on the Richter scale) during my stay. "Yet, these ancient people without the use of steel were somehow able to cut these huge rocks, often many tons, and fit them together so accurately and without the use of mortar or cement, that you cannot put a knife blade between them even today. "Every so many stones had a huge notch in one corner that prevented slippage and resisted the quakes. Rather than building straight up, they wisely slanted them slightly to the rear. And with the frequent notchea^it somehow tied them all together. "Of course, the roofs are not on these buildings (unless they have been reconstructed) but the doorways and window openings are often quite complete. I could not but stand in awe when viewing the remarkable engineering accomplishments of these ancient people. "I visited the Holy City of Pachacamac (dates back four or five thousand years); the ruins of Kenko (out of Cuzco (over 12,000 feet up in the moutains); Machu-Picchu, the largeat and moat spectacular sight of all, hidden until 1911, and the Palace of Puruchco, reconstructed in 1961.
