Now Serving You From 2 Locations ̂ (A monthly column from the Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Project of the McHenry County Conservation District. Written by Louise Miller.) In the spring, maker raccoons and chimneys go together. Whether you live in the country or in the middle of town, if you hear churring noises or scratching sounds coming from your fireplace, you can almost be sure that a mother raccoon haa decided to turn your chimney into a wildlife nursery. If you don't want to share your home with a family of raccooas, there * is an easy solution. Hang a flashlight or. mechanic's trouble light in the chimney, leave a radio playing in the fireplace and bang on the flue. This disturbance is usually enough to make mother raccoon look elsewhere for a place to raiae her young, for she wants a dark, quiet and secure place for them. When these conditions don't exist, she will move them to a new location. Never light a fire to get rid of wildlife from your chimney because the results are obviously disastrous to you and the creatures trapped there. If the young raccoona are too small to climb, they will die. Often the neat is inaccessible or difficult to reach and the consequences are dead animals and a bad smell in your home. When you have convinced mother raccoon to move her family, steps should be taken to prevent her return to the chimney. The best method is to cover the cMmney securely with strong hardware cloth or wire bolted in place. Be sure to check to see that the chimney is free of occupants before you do this, because a female raccoon may do considerable damage to your property while trying to get to her young. Keeping mother raccoon and young raccoons together is important. When a raccoon is about eight weeks (rid, it begins a natural learning proceas. The adult female begins to introduce it to foraging. During thia time, the young raccoon practicea its hunting and fishing tachatooes, ioarns about predators and becomes acquainted with ita surroundings. Human in tervention in this procoBB 1B un necessary and harmhil because the young raccoon's beat chance for survival in the wild is to learn and experience life under the watchful and protective eyes of the mother. During this learning time, many raccoons are made orphans, needlessly. People mistake than for orphans because they don't see an adult raccoon. They are captivated by the frolicsome, curious nature of theoe creatures and pick them up. But baby raccoons do not stay small for long, and aa they grow and become ' stronger, their wild nature surfaces and they become very dsatructive. The signs of a true orphan are un mistakable and should not be con fused with a young raccoon who is out after dusk foraging for food. A youngster that cries constantly or that is out of the nest with its eyes closed, or has flies buzzing around it, probably is in need of help. Call Sally Joosten, director of MCCD's Wildlife Rehabilitation Project at 815-338-3276, or the McHenry County Conservation district's office at 815-338-1405 if you should find a wild orphan. But pk*aes do not pick it up or handle it Young raccoons and other wild orphans are frightened creatures who may inflict serious bites Aid scrat ches. Orphans and non-orphans can also be victims of rabies or other diaeaaes, and there is no way of determining whether a wild animal is incubating rabies. The Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Project of the McHenry County Conservation district was formed to help orphaned and injured wildlife and to return them to the wild. The project can provide the Care, special diets and training that are necessary for wild animals and birds to resume their place in the wild. It to increase public awareness of e and the laws that protect them. People should enjoy wildlife in its natural surroundings-not in their homes.
