As the nation pauses on Memorial dsy to commemorate those who gave their lives in its defense, much of the activity will focus on ceremonies at the 106 national cemeteries opsrsted by the Veterans administration. Sometimes in past years, nearly all of the 1.6 million gravesitee in the nstional cemeteries have • been adorned with® small American flag. In recent years, however, the cemeteries and other VA facilities have adopted an innovative way to honor the memory of those who served through the creation of an "Avenue of Flags" program. On roadways or along walkways, standard burial flags aro placed on staff* and secured in psrmanent metal holders. The flags are spaced some 80 feet apart to provide sym­ metry. Thanks to the reeources end per­ sonnel of veterans service organisations, snd volunteers from other civic, community, and fraternal The flags, which had besn presented to families of friends of a deceased veteran, are donated to the VA. Over 38.9 million have perticipeted in the 10 major conflicts in American history. More than 30 million living Americans have served in the Armed Forces. The history of the national cemetery system dates back to 1862 whsn the need aroee to provide burial grounds in or around many Civil war bat­ tlefields. Later, cemeteries were opened to all honorably dtschargsd veterans.
