JUNE 4, l( Owls, Robins Sit Atop Little League Minors | After thre weeks of play, foor teams remain unbeaten In the McHenry Junior Youth league minor division - the Owls, Robins, Eagles, and the Ravens, who have yet to taste dsfeat. Action was light this weak becauae of the Memorial Day holiday, but the Owls continued their winning ways by knocking the Blue jays from the un beaten ranks 104. Winning pitcher Glick, Rhode Are Doubles Trouble 5S Jack Watrous was in command all the way in this five-inning game as he gave up only three hits and struck out 10 Bluejay batters. Chris Ziebel led the Owls' U-hit attack going 4-for-4 including a double b and four RBI's. Peter Hinker Gray each followed with As singles players. Randy Ghck and Scott Rhode of McHenry are two of the top high school players in the area But when the Warrior co-captains joined forces for the first time this season at the District meet last weekend, they turned out to be twice as good as they captured the doubles title to earn a trip to state. Randy, a senior playing only his second year of varsity, and Scott, a junior and last year's MVP, had some tough obstacles to overcome, to ad vance to Arlington and end McHenry's one year abeense at the state level The Warrior duo, unseeded in the district, opened with preliminary wins over the top doubles teams from Crystal Lake Central and Cary-Grove. In the qualifying round, they defeated Crystal Lake South's top seeded team of Rich Waters and Paul LeCoque in three sets, then defeated the Gators' other previously unbeaten team of Steve Towne and Jeff Novak in straight sets to wrap up the Utle. At the state meet, however, Randy and Scott lost two close matches to bow out of the tourney. In the first round they lost 64,6-4 to Tim Harvey and Mike Martin of Springfield Griffin, whichls McHenry coach Gary Gray's slma mater. In the consolation round, the Warrior duo had their season come to a cloee with a 6-3. 6-3 loss to Rockford Guilford's Dave Dennen and Chris Muldowney. But by just getting to the state meet, Randy and Scott had succeeded in accomplishing coach 7 Gray's preseason goal. My final prep Player of the Week, therefore, goes to both Randy Glick snd Scott Rhode McHenry. who doubled up to get to the state tournament. Next week...my choice as the top high school sports story of the 1961-62 school yesr Carl Moesche and two hits. Jeff Carl, Fred Bush, and Jamie Shaver all hurled for the Blueiays, and Shaver, Mike Hetterman, and Jay Gotham accounted for the three hits. In a game much ck*« than the score indicated, the Condors won their first game of the season with a 0-6 verdict over the Hawks. Matt Hopp went the full six innings, striking out if and giving up eight hits to record his first win. . Steve lacullo led the Condors' of^\ fense going 3-for-3 including two doubles, while Mstt Carson snd Dave Koeb added a double each. Shawn Morris and Jeff Lewis each had a double for the Hawks. The May 25 winners of the Low Putts contest were Meg Sundberg, Dorie Freund, Shirley Dawson, Laura Schmitt and Nancy McAuliffe all in class A with 15. In class B Nancy Kemp had 14 and Gwen Smith was best in class C with 19. The sun shone in spite of the forecasts for rain on a chilly June first, but everyone was moving slowly, probably, because of too much holiday activity the day before. Lu La Bay had a nice chip-in on four and Pat Bittermann put it in the cup on 15. Flo Manzardo's foursome reported s remarkable recovery for her when she landed on the cart path on eight from a fairway shot on seven and put her ball from there within a foot of the cup on seven green. One of the girls said the back nine made her want to sing Chloe "Through the dismal swampland searching for balls", but some sun shine and warm brsssss should soon dry it out. Next week the league starts st 6 a.m. so happy early bird golfing. Esta One of the clearest days to date opened the month of June and the first round of the three-round Class Match Play for the women at McHenry country club. Unfortunately, final postings were incomplete as of this writing. Therefore, next week's column will break the suspense snd report both rounds. Low gross of the day was a 94 shot by Carol Cooney. Carol also low- putted with 96 as Marlene Smith low netted 73 In Class A. Low nethn Class B was an 63 shot by Evie Castle while Caroline Harger low putted with 31. Nell Fidler and Lynn Schmidt btrdied 14 while Judy Smlthson birdied nine snd 15. A side event found s bird getting Evie Castle on four rather than the other 1 around. Up to that time her game been pretty clean. Among other items that don't become recorded on the scorecard, Letty Busscher earned the title of Tree Trunk Tessle pf the week. This day Letty discovered tress are more than ninety percent air as her ball way 1 had I connected with many of them. Although Fran Weyland's golf mstes considered her s stick in the mud due to some low spots caused by last week's rslns Frsn Herrmsnn played much of her game in the smooth. A nice chsnge for the judge's spouse. It was also noted that without her earrings Liz Nolan's light head bowed to Virginia Turner as Virginia took what turned out to be a close match on the 16th. The traveling team opened its season on Friday May 21 by hosting snd downing Bonnie Brook 6-3. The following week the' process wss repeated by a win over Lake Bluff 54- SVfc. * A fun affair by the Nifty Niners showed Dorothy Flynn snd Lorraine Gausdentied for low putts slthough Marge Adams snd Judy Alex son were making s run for it ss they each sank nice 20 foot one-putters on No. eight. Lorrsine Young wss slso making a pitch for the award as she struck the pin on her approach on nine. Inez Buralli must be sn squsrius. Her penchant for the water plopped her ball not once but twice into the creek on eight. Enough of the nonsense. Nest week Match Play will continue so... 'til then, Happy Golfing! Liz Pat Derby 1 in On The Sidelines By Dick Rabbit Everything good must eventually come to an end, so the McHenro high school athletic season for the year finally ended tnis post week. To the Eaduating seniors we wish them well in the future, whatever it may be. ay they look upon their high school days in the future as some of the best Umes in their lives, the victories, the defeats, the companionship, snd' most of all the times they represented s fine high school, s most wonderful community, and their parents and friends. May the good Lord Ness each and every one of them. Thanks to Greg Johnson principal at McHenry West, we sre sble to > give you fans some valuable information. By a vote of 365 to 320 against s proposal by a committee, the principals of Illinois high schools ruled, against the hiring of a person who is not regularly certified to teach in the 2 schools of Illinois to be permitted to coach. 4 This means a person must be certified by the state in order to coach. I may add that this is the first time in memory that the I.H.S.A. has gone against the actions of a committee on a proposal. * Another item most note-worthy to area fans is that a student from s private school may transfer to s public school snd be eligible immediately, providing that it is the students first entry into s public school. Probably the biggest item is the classificstion plan for the 1962-63 school year regarding the basketball tourneys. <*>. 1. All Chicago Public League schools shall beClaaa AA. 2. The largest thirty-five (35) percent of the member schools (excluding the Chicago public schools) shall be Class AA. 3. The smallest sixty-five (65) percent of the member schools, (excluding the Chicago public leage) shall be Class A. This could cause some concern for schools who formerly were on the border line in enrollments. It will be interesting to see the comments, ss s result of the poll taken by the I.H.S.A. by some of these schools. I still* think a third class in bssketball is the solution, but sgain I have been saying this for years, but have heard nothing but the so called "status quo" from the I.H.S.A. - . Putting the cover on the typewriter for the season, we must recognize a lot of people for the past year. You fans who have been just greet, even when I send you to the wrong place at the right time. To our Big Boss, Tom Miller who has been most understanding, and a great guy to work.. with in the business To Brenda, our editor who did get up early one morning to talk to my class, snd a great job she did for the students. To sll the cosches that I called at one time or another, and who always responed with favorable stories about their teams that I could not cover, and to the "Nite Owl" Sports Editor Carl, a great guy who was most helpful snd took care of my many mistakes, and there were many. And to that other column in the paper, who has been a friend forthany years, what will one of my favorite persons do this summer, when the better half has to settle for just reading S.I.H. With the good Lord willing, we will be back next season, and Mrs S.I.H. will again enjoy some good reading. Quoting a good friend "Liz" Happy Golfing everyone this summer.
