STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Urge Motorists To Report Drunk Drivers On Highway How can the motoring public help eliminate the deaths on our highways of innocent people by drunk drivers? Driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs attribute to over 50 percent of the nation's fatal accidents. Captain Richard L. Stone, District 2 State police commander, states that it would be a tremendous help to the Illinois State police and all other law enforcement agencies if, when the motoring public observes a possible drunk driver, they alert the State police or the nearest law enforcement department. The State police urge motorists who have a citizen band radio to call KIL- 0011, as all State police cars are equipped with citizen band radios and monitor channel 9. If they do not have a citizen band radio they should stop at the nearest telephone and call the nearest State police district. When reporting a possible drunken driver give as much information as possible. The color of car, direction of travel, number of occupants and license number if possible. Law enforcement officials agree that civilians who think they may be observing a drunk driver should look for some of the following indications: ...Constant swerving from lane to, lane. ...Constant increasing and decreasing of speed. ...Driving at night without headlights. ...Making wide turns at in tersections. ...Driving with bright lights con stantly. v ...Driving wrong way on street or highway. Captain Stone also states that district personnel are concentrating part of their patrol time to (D.U.I.) Driving Under the Influence, in high accident areas and highways that have been frequented previously by drunken drivers. This added attention being given to b.U.I. is one of the districts. Policing for Results, (P.F.R.) goals established to help curtail the problem of the drunken driver.
