Waging The Mosquito War Our moist spring and recent warm weather has brought out enough giosquitoes to make outdoor living un comfortable. Until frost, you'll need to protect yourself occasionally from these biting pests. The easiest methods to prevent being devoured alive are put into effect at the feeding site - your skin. Before going outdoors, apply an insect repellent con taining DEET (Cutters, Off, Muskol) to your exposed skin and under lightweight clothing. Creams, oils, and gels are generally more concentrated than sprays, but sprays are more effective for applying repellent to clothing. Because perfumes, dark clothing, and perspiration attract mosquitoes, wear light colored clothing and use unscented products when you'll be outdoors. Mosquitoes are most active during the evening, so plan yard work and outdoor ac tivities for the afternoon when possible. Mosquito pills which claim to repel mosquitoes usually contain garlic or thiamine (Bl). Garlic does repel mosquitoes for some people, but can drastically reduce your social acceptability. Thiamine attracts or repels moaquitoes, depending on your body chemistry. Consult a physician before using this method, because mega-doses of vitamins &n be harmful. Electronic bug killers reduce mosquito numbers, but you should use them only when you plan to be outdoors, since their continued use also reduces the number of beneficial insects and insect- eating birds. Before outdoor gatherings, sprsy shrubs and tall grass with malathion. Since the effect is temporsry, you may want to supply guests with a repellent. Mosquito sprsy parties could be the next fad. Blue lodge, Legal Notice Seniors Eligible For Break Seniot citizens could receive an automobile liability premium discount for completion of an ap proved defensive driving course under a new law effective July 1, Secretary of State Jim Edgar said! Friday. Edgar's office currently is preparing to implement the new law, which would require insurance companies to offer premium discounts to persons 56 and over complete defensive driving courses approved by the Secretary of State's office. "The new law has several sub stantial benefits, both to seniors and others concerned about traffic safety. "More than 1.7 million senior citizens will be eligible for the discount, and it will provide an in centive for them to take defensive driving courses, which should mean^ demand. If there is enough interest in year and other insurance rating factors. In other states it has been as high as 15 percent. The Secretary of State's office is responsible for approving and monitoring instructors and agencies administering the courses, issuing certification to persons who have successfully completed a course, and making senior cititens aware of the discount and available courMi Edgar said four other states currently provide for some form of liability insurance premium reduction for persons completing defensive driving courses. "It is difficult to tell at this point just how many courses will be offered and if all geographic areas of the state will have courses available for senior citizens," Edgar said. "It's a matter of supply snd gh inter improved safety on our roads and highways," Edgar said. The amount of the discount would vary, Edgar said, depending upon the amount of the driver's coverage, geographic location, miles driven per an area, a responsible agency would probably be interested in offering a course. We will be examining spon soring agencies and their instructors very closely to make sure they meet our standards."
