Hiller & Hamm had led for most of the contest and a double play in the last inning had all but wrapped it up. Rut two straight singles and the home run which barely escaped Jeff Meyers' outstretched glove over the 300 foot fence, gave the McHenry area team a second place finish in the 32- team affair Myron Bentz, who had a tremen dous tournament at the plate, led Hiller & Hamm in the title game with three hits iiMour at bats. Both John Meyers and Bob Michaels followed with two hits each Hiller & Hamm opened tournament play Saturday afternoon with a convincing 18-4 win over West Tec of Glen Ellyn. Wayne Hiller led all batters going 4- for-4 with a triple and three runs scored, while both John Meyers and Don Bentz had two hits, and Myron blasted another home run. In the semi-finals, Hiller A Hamm once again survived an early barrage and hung on to win. Trailing 12-4 after one and one half innings, Hiller A Hamm rallied by scoring in every inning but one to edge the Runts from Chicago 16-15. In a wind Mown affair which carried virtually every fly ball to right field over the fence, the Runts smacked six out of the park for a commanding lead. But Bill Meyers hit his second homer of the tournament in a 3-for-4 performance and Don Bentz hit a two- run blast scoring Jeff Meyers ahead of him for what proved to be the winning runs in the bottom of the sixth. Yaworski led all batters going 4-for- 4, while Don Bentz went 3-for-3, John Meyers went S-for-4, and Jeff Meyers scored three runs. The Whale's Tail then moved into the winners bracket where they became the first of three McHenry area teams to fall to Hillery. In another close contest, the Tail lost only by a 5-2 verdict. Jim Gray paced the losers with three straight hits to give him 5-for-6 for the two games. Bad News, annually one of the top teams in Joliet, went on to win its next four games to capture the consolation title. -, The two other McHenry teams, Back Door Tavern and Novotney Sales, also won their opening round games, but bowed out of the tour nament in the opening round of the winners bracket. , Back Door defeated General Kinetics of Cary before losing to the Rusty Nail, while Novotney Sales defeated Pepper Lake Restaurant of Barring ton before falling to the Barber Shop Lounge. Doherty Shifts Lineup For Victory Area Golfers Star CHAMPAIGN -- Four members from the McHenry high school golf team were selected to play in the Illinois Junior Championship In vitational held last week Wednesday on the University of Illinois' Orange Course. The players Kirk Barnicle, Mike Hauml, Brad Adams, and Tom Neuman - were among 100 par ticipants invited exclusively by the committee chairman to play in the annual tournament held on the Ulini's home course Playing on a rainy, cold afternoon, Barnicle emerged as the tournament medalist as he fired a superb 75 to lead the field Bauml placed fifth, only two strokes behind as he carded a 77. Doherty's, although going into last Wednesday's 'Game of the Week' versus the Johnsburg Businessmen at 5-1, was well below last season's batting marks in men's 12-inch soft- ball. The top four batters were hitting below .400 and only Jerry Brodin was hitting the ball with any consistency. Newcomers Chris Cook and Jim Perriwe were both hitting in the mid 400's but last yaar at thia time everyone in the starting lineup was hitting over .450. Enter owner Dick Doherty, taking the helm for manager Tom Roach who was not going to be there. Doherty changed and revised the lineup moving Perriwe, Cook and Brodin up to the two, three and four spots. As the game progreased, Doherty's scored in every inning, slammed 22 base hits and came out on top of previously undefeated Johnsburg by a score of 11-10 Perriwe, Cook and Brodin combined for 10 hita (going 10- for-ll!). The contest was everything 12-inch fans have learned to expect when two of the better teams collide. Plenty of hitting, excellent fielding, see-saw leads and a close final score with either team deserving to win. Myron Bentz put the Businessmen up by two in the first with a two-run double. Doherty's retaliated with Broden's 2-run hit plus Irish DeCic- cio's sacrifice for a 3-2 lead. In the second, Doherty shortstop Steve Mai, picked up a deflected baU and threw out Harry May in a truly great hustling performance. Doherty's Jerry Brodin drove in another run in the bottom of the inning for a two run lead. Doherty's scored another run in the third on Steve Mai's RBI single. But again they left a pair of runners on base nine for the evening! Don Bentz singled in Myron after a leadoff double to start the fourth. But Harry May's lineout doubleplay ended the Businessmen half and provided the push for Doherty's biggest inning. Four runs came across with Brodin, Wayman and both DeCicco's picking up RBI's Doherty's held a 9-3 ad vantage. However the bottom of Johnaburg's lineup came to life in the fifth as Jim Meyers, Tom Spasojevich and both Bentz's knocked in 5 runs to close the gap to a run. Chris Cook's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning gave Doherty's a two run lead. But in the sixth, Eric Schiller (whocame off the bench to go 2-for-2) knocked in a run and then tied the score as he crossed the plate on a Jim Meyer's single. The bottom half of the inning looked as though Doherty's would finally be held scoreless. With two outs and a runner on first John DeCiccio hit what looked like a routine fly to right center. But the ball carried over the fielder's glove and went for a triple to the fence. A two-out Businessmen rally in the seventh folded with the tying run stranded at second base and Doherty's held on for the one run vitory. Perriwe (4-for-4), Cook (3-for-3), John DeCicco (3-for-3), Jerry Brodin (3-for-4), Randy Vauk (3-for-4), plus Wayman and Jeff Meddings (two hits each) powered Doherty's to the victory which leaves them tied for first with Johnsburg. Jim Meyers (3-for-3), Myron Bentz (3-for-4), Don Bentz (3-for-4), along with Harry May, Phil Oeffling and Eric Schiller (two hits each) were the Businessmen hitting leaders Johnsburg Bus. 2 0 0 1 5 2 6 • 10 Doherty's 3 1 1 4 1 1 x • 11 Johnsburg was an easy victor in their second contest on Wednesday.
