PAGE 4 - PLA1NDEALER - WEDNESDAY. JUNE M. IM2 EARL WALSH"" So I Hear to those Cubs? Sox fans will demand equal time. Now, for you ladtaa who don't sports news in S.I.H., 111 try to please you in future columns. Eagle Scout Honored Another week. And swsy we go! Driving through Johnsburg brings back memories of good friends who have been called from this earth to s better place. Billy Meyer always had a friendly greeting. So did Fred Smith, Joe Frett, Frank Freund and Tony Sch- mitt. All good men. There are others, but these just come to mind. Seem to have traffic on my mist). Pedestrians have the right of way, but it helps to be fast on your feet. Have seen some dirty looks cast by pedestrians at drivers who pull across the sidewalk line at a stop sign. Bicycles are problems no matter what is said or written. I'm not as concerned about the way bike riders ignore the rules of the road as I am fearful of them being injured. Boiling Meadows has a Bicycle Patrol to check equipment, advise rules and issue tickets when necessary. Educating riders is most important. However, when you see two 16 or 17 year old boys breeze through a stop sign and yell something smart-alecky to a car driver, you know they deserve tickets. On the other fist, some car drivers take a terrible attitude toward bike Riders, thinking they have no right on the road They also need an education program. Until something is done besides' talking, car drivers will have to be extra careful. Slow down. Still have traffic on my mind. The thrills of driving a few blocks: Headed south on Green St, Four- way stop at Pearl St. Car to my left had the right to proceed. Me next. Hit the brakes! Second car to my left zoomed through without waiting for turn. Another Mock to Elm. Sign oh post tells drivers that right lane must turn t. reads signs? Car and truck go straight, cutting in front of car ahead of me. So down to Waukegan St. Two kids on bikes pay no heed to stop sign. Car headed north hits brakes - hard. ride merrily along. So, I pull into hospital lot and! go visiting. On my way out, I suddenly see an entrance only sign. Car was through by that time so drove on- just another one of THOSE drivers. . It is quite a job to please the ladies, but we work at it. Some say they don't want any sports items in this column. Then, along comes Mrs. William Lewis of 2nd Ave. to tell us she grew up just two blocks from Wrigley Field. Yep. She's a Cub fan. Mrs. Lewis goes back a ways in remembering when men were men and Cubs were ballplayers. She really isn't so old. Maybe she >v)ust heard these names which she can rattle off: Charlie Grimm, Phil Cavaretta, Rogers Hornsby, Billy Hermann, Billy Jurges, Woody English, Stan Hack, Riggs Stephenson, Hack Wilson, Kiki Cuyler, Cliff Heathcote and Gabby Hartnett. If those regulars didn't hit over .300, it was back to the bushes I don't think you mentioned pit chers, Mrs Lewis. Here are some names: Guy Bush, Charlie Root and Pat Malone Add names like Erickson, Bowory, Passeau and Wyse. Met a fellow who asked, "Do you know Raymond Smith." Sex I, "Do you mem Aldsrman Ray Smith of Ward 3 (formerly known as the bloody third)? Yep. Identification was complete. "Do you realise what a great golfer he is?" I knew he played, but didn't know of his neatness. "Would you believe? He shot a C Sunday." Wow! move over Arnold Palmer. "Of course", said the fellow, "that was for nine holes."
