In all, there are about 50 nutrients needed for proper growth and sound health. No single food will provide all of them. But if one eats a variety of foods that give the proper amounts of the Big Ten, odds are one will also get the proper amounts of the other 40 or so, too. Here's the Big Ten lineup - as well as some of the tasks each nutrient takes on: Protein-helps build and maintain cells; forms part of one's eniymes, antibodies and certain hormones; provides one with energy. Carbohydrate-provides one with energy; may also supply one with the fiber needed for normal elimination. Fat-forms part of one's cells; carries fat-soluble vitamins; provides one with energy. Vitamin A-helps form certain skin membranes; promotes heslthy eye tissue. Vitamin C-forms part of substance that holds body cells together; helps one utilise the iron needed. Thiamin (vitamin B-l)-contributes to the normal functioning of one's nervous system; helps one utilise energy. Riboflavin (vitamin B-2)*-> maintains clear vision and healthy skin; helps one utilise energy. Niacin-promotes normal digestion. Calctum-gives strength to bones and teeth; assists in normal blood clotting; helps muscles to contract and relax properly. Iron-combines with protein to form hemoglobin, a substance that carries oxygen throughout the body. Getting the Big Ten - snd getting them in the right smounts - may seem like s mammoth task that, perhaps, only a professional nutritionist could accomplish. Ac tually, nothing is further from the truth. One can easily get all these leader nutrients simply by eating the recommended number of daily ser vings from the four food groups - milk, meat, fruits and vegetables, and grains Reservations are essential and may be made by calling Ruth, 653-9406, or Lorraine, 365-5475, trior to noon, July 12. A free nursery Is provided with a reservation. How so? Simple. Each of the four food groups is built around several leader nutrients. The milk group, for instance, is built around calcium, riboflavin and protein. The grain group, on the other hand, has at its foundation carbohydrate, thiamin, iron and niacin. Together, the four food groups provide one with all of the 10 leader nutrients. If one is getting the Big Ten, one is probably also getting all the other trace nutrients. And if one is eating from the Basic Four, one is getting the Big Ten.
