Grot mr forget to ny "Thank you!' lets go ol it To a child who has just learned to walk, each new day brirm fresh opportunities for discovery. And now thst the feet are travelling, the child shoosa growing desire for in- dependence. One of the ways a child learns in dependence is by imitating her parents snd siblings, according to Growing Child, the monthly child development newsletter. The child toddles around the house. And she begins to explore hsr i - imitating others by pulling off her ckp, tugging on show bices, pulling off shoes. Every mother who has tied a toddler's shoe laces in a double knot knows that even this is scant protection from the prying, pulling and poking fingers of s persistent child Don't let your youngster's apparent determination to join the nearest nudist colony worry you. She is Just as interested in exploring her clothes and herself as she is in exploring the rest of her world. So take advantage of her interest to start her on the road to independence. As you get her ready for her bath, encourage her to help. Untie her shoe laces and loosen them as you ssy, "Now we'll take off Erin's shoe! We untie them, we pull the laces, and off it comes!" Let the child pull die laces out. Pulling these strings through the little holes is greet fun - and good hand-eye training, too. Soon she can unlace the shoe all by herself. What an accomplishment! Look out, though - as she kicks her feet in excitement that shoe might really fly! Before that happens, show her how to pull it off, and then say, "Now give the shoe to Mommy, please". Get a grip on it before she throws it to see if shoes will fly, or drops it on the floor to find out what kind of noise it makes! And don't Socks mil off too top down over the child's heet, and pull the toe looee. Twitch it and pull K a little, saying. "You pell it off!" When she pulls it off with a flourish, be ready with, "Give the sock to Mom my? Thank you!!" As you and your toddler go about getting the rest of tar clothes off, follow the same ptocedurc. Get the garment part way off and let her finish pulling it off. And talk about what you and she are doing Does all this sound Hhc just play and pretty time consuming for a busy mother? It Is play, granted, but your child is learning important leesons about hsr clothes snd herself, about on and off, about how to balance herself while she pulls off a shoe or sock! She also learns shout the characteristics and textures of shoes, shoe laces, socks, shirts, etc. And how about the lesson on neatness (Give the shoe to Mommy) snd the lesson on politeness (plea-- and thank-you)? All this, plus taking some early steps toward independence. P.S.: A word to the wise: When you buy your toddler a pair of shoes, always buy at least one extra peir of shoe laces, and keep some white glue on hand Eager little hands are hard on shoe lace tips, snd there's nothing more frustrating than trying to push s bushy-tailed shoe lace through s small eyelet when the shoe is on s wriggling foot. But, if you are like many Americans, you are not so definite about the question of whether or not you have sufficient health care insurance. Provisions for adequate health-care coverage should be made before you retire. Find out everything you can about Medicare before you become eligible so that any gaps in coverage may be filled in with supplemental insur ance. Major insurance compan ies provide plans to meet in dividual needs and pocket- books. But, you have to know what Medicare covers and does not cover in order to sel ect a plan that closes the gaps and does not duplicate cover age. The key to adequate cov erage does not lie in the num ber of policies, but in the benefits provided by each policy. WHAT S NEW It's a good idea, before you retire, to see if your group coverage can be retained or converted to a plan that sup plements Medicare. If you hold membership in a pro fessional or fraternal organ ization, check to see if they provide group coverage to members. If you're eligible for Medi- cade (determined on income and assets) as well as Medi care, you may have sufficient health care protection. But, you do need to know, before retirement, if there are gaps in your health coverage that naedto be filled. Makab&mtjful legpndyourom. Exclusively at McHenry Savings & Loan.
