Edelsteln Networks have traditionally alleviated the tedium of summer reruns by airing pilots of series that were being considered for the fall schedule, but which were ultimately rejected. 1 It's obvious why most of them were axed. But every so often, a no-show deserves a better fats. One such series is "The High Five," which airs Thursday, July 22f on NBC. "The High Five," an amusing sitcom about a black- owned TV station operating on a shoestring budget, is a sort of "WKRP" gone funky. It's also one of the rare.times that a predominantly black cast has been shown working at a professional, white-collar job. (How many times have you ever seen George Jefferson working in his dry-clean ing store?) * , " KBHX, Channel 56, broadcasts from a dilapidated basement studio in Watts. Like WKRP, the station is home to s cast of memorable zanies. Station owner Calvin Washburn (Ted Ross of "The Wiz" and "Arthur") Is al shaven-headed, handlebar-mustachioed cheapskate. Vel- ma Williams (Clarice Taylor), the Bible-quoting cooking- show hostess ("Kill it with a Skillet") alternates as the co- anchor of the newscasts. Anchormsn Wilson Porter (Frsnklyn Seaies), Is a pris sy. light-skinned black, who acts like Tony RandaH's Felix linger and speaks in a clipped, precise voice. He is con stantly being taunted by Jamaal, the office messenger (Clinton Derricks-Carroll). who seems to have studfcJ al the Jimmie Walker Institute of Strset Cod. The pHof s plot focuses around the station's effqrts tc cover a local parede. Washburn rents the cheapest possi ble sound truck available to cover the parade and ther talks a local funeral director into sponsoring the eveet. Bu the generator on the truck blows. So not to lose the-spon sor. Washburn orders his staff to fake coverage of th< telecast. ("It's as easy as getting heartburn m a rib joint, he insists.) "The High Five" was apparently in contention for a spo on the fall schedule right up until the final choices wen made. Why it wasn't added leads to a deeper question How marketable is an sH-black cast in thsse less-thsn liberal times? Indeed, the NAACP recently complained t< the networks about the lack of black faces on TV. But NBC recently added "Taxi" and renewed "T4ech ers Only." without immediately slotting them in the iphed uie. Maybe there's hope yet that "The High Five" wfl nc be deep-sixed. ̂ ̂ ©n Sutan St. J onus, low Ayort 1973 0 ® Nile Owl Service 0 Sick Cavott Third of 4 partt.
