He maintained the just aims of labor were shorter hours, higher wages and greater freedom. A native of London. Gompers came to New York asa boy and joined the Cigar Makers Union. The union subsequently collapsed, but Gompers headed a reorganisation which made the cigar makers a model group. The Federation of Organised Trades and Labor Unions which in lSSHate^became the American Federation of Labor. Except for one year, Gompers headed this body until his death. He was widely recognized for his ability to deal with labor County Fair Dog Shows Scheduled The 4-H Dog projects for the McHenry County fair will be judged July 84 and July 31. The shows are held before the fair starts because state fair entries must be turned in earlier as that show is being held Aug. 8. The July 84 program will begin at 8 a.m. with Obedience and Grooming judged. July 81 will have Showmanship at 8 a.m. followed by Dog Care. I MS Prison Art Show< A prison art show, exhibiting 78 to 188 works by srtists serving time in state prisons, will be held between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday, July 18, on the lawn of the Old Courthouse and inside the upper level of the building on the downtown city square. Featured artiat will be Jack Allman, who is free after serving a 17- year prison term. Hie "Prison Art Show" is sponsored by the McHenry County Jsil Rehabilitation program. Exhibits include oils, pastels and other forms of painting media. Allman will also have a "pet corner" to display some of his drawings and paintings of animals.
