Afterail, Little John's was the only ballclub playing on Monday night not headed for the playoffs in men's 12-inch softball. However, the "new tradition" team, skippered by Dave "Andre" Miller, gave Doherty's (9-2) all it could handle as the contest went into extra innings before a five-run eighth was just too much for Little John's (1-10) to overcome. The final: Doherty's 14 Little John's 12. Doherty's took an early lead when Jerry Brodin, the league's top hitter at .707, hit the first of his three singles to drive in Jeff Meddings. Meddings would eventually go 4-for-5 in the contest. Little John's retaliated in its half of the first as Steve Lane and Miller both hit RBI singles. Both batters would eventually get two more hits apiece with Lane accounting for four RBI's. Randy Vauk, Tom Roach, and Mike Rogers all drove in a run each to push Doherty's back into the lead at 4-2. However, the bottom of the Little John's started a rally in the second by scoring five times to take over a 7-4 lead. Bill Peterson and Dave Schmidt both singled followed by Jim Quinn and John Griffith RBI singles. Lane hit a deep fly off the left field fence for a triple and Pete Blackburn's single scord Lane. Doherty's knotted the score at 7-7 with a three-run fourth as Mike Rogers and Brodin had RBI hits and Jim Perriwe unloaded a sacrifice fly. Perriwe and Steve Mai singled in runs in the fifth as Doherty's went ahead by two. But back came Little John's as Mike Yaworski hit a pinch single and Quinn followed with a two-run inside-the- park homer Doherty's might've scored in the seventh if it weren't for pitcher Dave Schmidt's fielding play on the mound. An inning earlier, Schnmidt somehow snared Rogers' line shot and fir- stbaseman "Andre" Miller made another gave-saving play as he bodyblocked a ground ball and threw for a force out. Going into the first extra inning affair this season Doherty's was rolling. Meddings singled, Perriwe doubled, and Brodin was walked in tentionally to load the bases. Jim Wayman then walked forcing in a run, Irish DeCiccio sacrificed, Mai hit a two-run single, and John DeCicdo's base hit put Doherty's ahead by five. But Little John's never gave up. Yaworski (2-for-2) hit another leadoff single, Quinn singled, and Griffith walked to .load the bases. Jim Grabowski's ground ball to second was bobbled for an error with a run scoring, then Lane sacrificed to cut the lead to three. But on the throw to the plate, the runner on second broke for third and was an easy out. With two outs, another Doherty infield error brought home the final run, but that would be all as Doherty's hung on to win 14-12. Jim Meyers, Wayne Hiller, Myron Bentz, Harry May, and Mark Schultz all had two hits and John Meyers tripled to the fence.
