JULY 23,1982 _ v > ^ ^ ^ ••• fl fl Rusty Nail Nips West End Pub As 12" Races Tighten The Rusty Nail Inn held the West End Pub-KiM It to three runs while scoring just one more themselves in a low scoring 4-3 Nail victory in men's 12-inch soitbell Monday night. The victory pulls the Nail to within one game of the western division co- leaders while the Pub, with a victory in game two over Little John's, stayed one game back of eastern leader. Fox Hole Tap. John Conneli was the hero in Rusty Nail's ninth victory of the season. Conneli went 3-for-3, drove in two runs, made five good defensive plays from the mound including a sen sational "look what I've found" grab of Terry Hovseth's ground smash and pitched six shutout innings against a powerhouse Pub ballclub The Nail did not have an extra base hit in the content although Jim Zasada's first inning shot to right center might have been a triple except for his missing first base. Instead it turned into an out, although hotly disputed, and a possible big inning petered out. The West End Pub struck for their only runs of the contest in their half of the second. Four successive hits in cluding a two run triple by Tom Wallen and an RBI double by Don Prazak put the Kiss It crew up by three. But John Cornell ended that rally snaring two successive ground shots for 1-3 putouts. Rick Wakitsch slammed the first of two singles to lead off the Nail secood. Gary Schmitt's line single to right moved Wakitsch to third which set up John Cornell's first RBI single- Larry Jones singled in Schmitt to close the gap to a run. in the Nail fourth, Conneli along with A1 Stilling hit RBI singles to put the winners up by one run and end the scoring for both teams for the game.' Schmitt and Kevin Freund scored the runs, both having singled themselves. West End Pub left six runners on base from the third through sjxth innings before going down 1-2-3 in the seventh. But it was not an easy 1-2-3 as Ron Lentine made a sensational grab of Terry Hovseth's grounder between second and first and threw him out. After starting eastern division All Star third baseman John Michaels flew out to left center, the Nail's Lentine came up with the game en ding out retiring the Pub's leadoff better Chuck Gandolfi in anothtr 44 West Bad-Kiss It Rasty Nafllaa -3 \ - 4 For the few fans who turned out lor Monday's finale between Lee ft Mary's* Lakeside Inn and Peer Inn- jack's Snack Shop it was worth the price of admission as Peer Inn waited until the final two innings to come to life for an exciting 8-7 victory. The winners pulled back into a tie with Whale's Tail for third place in the East while Lakeside Inn dropped 10 games off the pace in the West. The Snack Shop literally spotted Lee ft mary's a 7-1 lead as four costly errors brought in the last four Lakeside runs But four miscuss by Lakeside put Peer Inn back in the driver's seat. Dave Jackson was the hero with his bases loaded single (his third hit of the contest) in the seventh. Bob Michels, Rich Jablonski and John Oeffling added two hits each for the Snack Shop.
