Upon the sale being made the purchaser or purchasers will receive a Certificate of Pur chase which will specify purchased v nw vision of any drugs - prescription or non-prescription - that Wit be taken before getting behind the wheel. Vision changes also affept the safety of aging pedestrians. Approximately 41 percent of pedestrians killed in traffic each year are people over 45. They usually are crossing i street at an intersection or between in tersections. Older adults can help avoid ac cidents to pedestrians fy checking approaching traffic, and by keeping in mind th*H their ability to judge distance may be affected by vision change. The last item of advice, of course, is that elders be faithful to a regimen of examination by eye Specialists ophthalmologist or optometrist at least once a year If you have a question on the problems of aging, write to Carl Riblet Jr. at P O. LaSalle St. Chicago, IL., 80802 312 372-4784 (Pub. July 28, Aug. 4.11 18,1982) By Carl Riblet Jr. Q. "I went to an eye doctor and after he told me I would have cataracts in the near future, he said I ought to be very careful driving because older people have changes in vision that can upset their abfRty to see and recognize what is on the road ahead. Can you find out what we senior drivers should watch oat for and will you print it in your column?" -* Frank B. A. The American Optometric association lists some of the problems that changes in ^vision may bring about in driving, such as the ability to see clearly when driving at night, to see against the glare of oncoming headlights and to recover quickly from glare, to judge distances bet ween the driver's vehicle and other vehicles or objectsIn the road, and to detect movement from the side while looking straight ahead. To com pensate, older drivers should: Seek regular vision examinations. Take time to adjust to a new eyeglass or contact lens before driving Avoid using eyeglasses with frames tha^ are so wide they may block side vision. Wear quality sunglasses on sunny or bright, cloudy days. Never wear sunglasses, or fashion- tinted glasses, including yellow tinted lenses, when driving at night. Confine driving to speeds, hours and places that are comfortable. For example, avoid driving at dusk. When driving at night, reduce speed, limit driving to well-lighted or familiar roads. Keep headlights, tail lights and turn signala clean and properly adjusted. Keep head and eyes moving so as to get the big picture while driving. Check rear view mirrors and the side of the road frequently. Keep pace with the traffic flow; not too fast, not too slow Avoid pulling off alongside the high way. If necessary, use the car's four- way emergency flashers. Keep windshield and rear windows clean, inside and out, and replace worn wiper blades promptly. Keep rear view and outside mirrors clean and properly adjusted. Be aware of their limitations. Don't block rear windows with packages or window decals. Be aware that a small object, such as a camera, when left on the back of the rear seat will fly forward with force enough to fracture a skull when the car is stopped abruptly. Choose a car with clear, rather than tinted windshields. Avoid smoking when driving. It interferes with night vision, fogs windshields and, when packing a pipe or lighting a cigaret, can be a dangerous diversion from the task of dTm!y seem needless ton-nkid that', cactus plants drinking and driving don't mix,'but I '7* *n North America- IS Metteo Improve Photos Remember all the times last summer when you wished you'd had your camera with you? This year, don't let that happen - do get your best pictures ever, by following these guidelines: 1) Keep the background simple. Cluttered backgrounds are distrac ting. 2) Add interest and dimension by including a colorful object or a person in the foreground of scenic pictures, or use a natural frame such as a tree branch or a window. m, 3) Add depth by using a line, such as a road, a fence, or a row of trees, to lead the eye into the scene. 4) Move in close. If you are too far away from your subject, ̂ details are lost. At a closer range, objects stand out and there are large arefcs of color. 5) Do not try to include too much from too far away. Distant scenes will appear very small in the picture and detail will be lost. 6) Shooting a portrait? Choose the right light. Bright, hazy sunshine or bright shade is best. The soft light reveals skin color and texture, and there are no ugly shadows obscuring the face. 7) Shooting pictures of people on a sunny day? To avoid unflattering "owl eyes" shadows, use a fill-in flash or a camera with the flash built-in 4 A o . 820328 i he reminder cannot be made too often. It is good, but the plant breeders aren't completely happy with it. The perfect petunia for flower beds would have a strong but compact plant that would remain low and not fall apart in the rain. It would have large. • v W? • w vivid blossoms, lots of them, maybe with fancy frilled or wavy edges. Rain and sun would not fade the colors nor would diseases mar their beauty. There have been 49 medals given to petunias in the fift^- year history of All- America Selections But none has been for a yellow petunia, mainly because the colors, while pleasing, aren't sufficiently vivid and the plants aren't compact as breeders would like. Experts are confident that plant breeders will soon develop a yellow petunia just as good as today's excellent scarlet hybrids. Then it won't be a question of its winning an All-America award, but whether the award will be a bronze, silver or gold.
