Heirlooms, mementos, photographs, keep sakes, and even items that are amusing fads, or whimisical trivia, will be included in the Fiesta Days Time Capsule, to be safely installed in the protective bosom of Pearl Street Park, and opened' one hundred years from this sum mer. It is not that 1962 is a special anniversary Sidewalk Sale year for our com munity, our state, or our nation. But perhaps that is appropriate, for it is always the day-to-day experiences that really make up a full life, and not just the landmark events. And yet this particular year has significance within our business community because George R. J us ten Funeral Home and Peter M. Justen k Sons are each celebrating their 100th year in business in a successive line of family owners. Every segment of the com munity represent itself through participation, planning, creativity, hard work, and a daz zling variety of small town Americana ideas through this 10-day festival. However, the energy, enthusiasm, and inventiveness oi business people, civic leaders, and area residents cannot be captured to show future townsfolk the joyous feeling of team work experience In putting together such as fest. The laughter of children the smiles of senior citizens, the hustle and bustle of parents her ding their young from one event to the next will be missing from the lime capsule. But the momentos will all be there. The souveniers, the pictures , the models, the stories, and the treasurers of this era. The ten days of feasting, fun, and en tertainment assembled for Fiesta Days, by the City of McHenry and the Chamber of Commerce, as well as countless other area residents, will be an old age memory to today's children, but the zest for living, the community spirit, the joyful sharing of talents will be a link to other festivals for years to come. Hopefully the opening of the time capsule in 2082 will be surrounded by as much ceremony and festivity as the filling of the capsule. The poet Rainer Maria Rilke said, "The future enters into us, in order to transform itself in us, long before it happens." May the Fiesta Days of 1182 become a lasting thread -woven into the future celebrations of McHenry and its people. by Judy Irwin
