FLOWER BARREL CONTEST For the second year, the McHenry . Beautification committee will hold a contest for the best flower barrels. Judging will be done within the next week, which allows lime to get them in top condition. HOW TO FIND NEW VARIETIES Everyone in the home garden seed trade wishes they coukl improve the availability of new varieties. Each year, dozens of truly new and good flowers and vegetables are in troduced. You will find a few of them in seed displays in retail stores. Progressive growers who specialize in the newest and best, will offer seedling plants. But it comes down to seed catalogs as the most dependable source of new varieties. Catalogs offer what seedsmen call "proprietary varieties", sold ex clusively by one company. In ad dition, almost all seed catalogs will offer the new All-America Selections, varieties of flowers and vegetables selected as the best in each class. It is quite an accomplishment to have 50 strong-minded experts agree on each year s crop of all-America Selections. This is not a commercial scam but a sincere program to help your garden.
