Nancy McChre. of McHenry, Realtors Record By Yvonna Beer, Executive Officer, McHenry County Board of Realtors range. Eighteen percent of thoae sold had price tags of 180,000 or more, the survey showed. Converted rental apartments ac counted for nearly 40 percent of the condo market and had a median price of 848,900, 40 percent leas than the median price of a new single-family home. Converted units were the least expensive type of home, according to the survey. The survey indicated that more than half of all condo buyers are entering the homebuying market for the first time, compared with 40 percent of single-family home buyers who were buying their first residence. More than 75 percent of converted- unit buyers were purchasing for the first lime A condo is a wise first-home pur chase because the apprecation rate has been comparable to single-family homes Many condoe include such amenities as swimming pools and other recreational facilities that the buyer normally wouldn't be able to afford. Maintenance ia provided, and many condos now qualify for government-inaured, assumable mortgagee which, until recently, were available only to buyers of single family homes Condominiums now rank ahead of every type of home purchase except single-family houses, according to a National Association of Realtors survey Singles appear to dominate the condo market, with women buying 31 percent of the units, men buying 24 percent, and married couples without children buying 27 percent of the units sold in 14 major metropolitan areas in late summer of 1900 The remaining 18 percent were sold to families and unrelated couples or groups. Condominiums represented 11 percent of all homes purchased, with single-family houses making up 76 percent, town houses 8 percent and two-to-three-family dwellings 5 percent, the survey showed. These statistics show that apart ment condominiums are becoming an increasingly popular choice for thoae who wish to own a home instead of renting, especially for unmarried people, according to the McHenry County Board of Realtors. Condominiums often are the least expensive type of home and serve as a suitable transition from renting to owning. However, not all con dominiums are in the lower price T h e N a t i o n a l Association of Trade and.
