Waiz SCOOPS -- Increased early morning news coverage by the three networks has claimed its first victim -- "USam." the CBN early morning news magazine show. CBN launched "USam" last summer on a shoestring budget, hoping that this show, which would air before "Today," "Good Morning America" and CBS' "Morning News." would entice independent and network affiliates to take the program as a lead-in. Three months ago "USam" had secured a lineup of nearly 40 TV stations, some in major markets, including affiliates. But CBN's show was doomed when the major webs decided to increase their early morning news coverage. The other early morning news programs offered by Satellite News Channel and Cable News Network have big money behind their operations CBN, which received rave notices for its attempt, unfortunately could not engage the networks in an all-out battle because of a lack of capital. Terry Meeuween, the "USam" co-hostess, has already secured a network position. She'll be the fea­ tured performer on this year's Miss America Pageant, which will be teiecast by NBC from Atlantic City in early September. Miss Meeuwsen won the title herself in 1973. W1TCHY-WASHY -- CBS programming execs have had second thoughts after getting a lukewarm reaction from its affiliated stations to the pilot episode of the new series "The Good Witch of Laurel Canyon."
