OFFICER JACK WALSH He was a native of Ireland where policeman wen born. For more than 40 years, the late Jack Walsh was city marshal, chief of police, deputy sheriff, constable and truant officer, the law of McHenry wrapped up in one. These duties began before the turn of the century at a salary of $48 per month. There were no police uniforms in McHenry in those days; the derby hat and cigar were standard equipment. When asked why he seldom made an arrest, his reply was, "My job is to keep people out of trouble, not to get them into it". I Another question was, "Why don't you aver pull your gun?" The reply was, "If I ever pull that gun,. I'll use it." Being on call 24 hours a day, it was mostly footwork in the early days. At one time he owned a very fast driving horse that was famous for overtaking a horse thief north of Spring Grove. Stories related by old timers are numerous, but can be summed up with a general feeling that Officer Jack Walsh tempered justice with firmness and fairness. PLANT BREEDERS Most gardeners take it for granted that every year they'll find a " or mora good varieties of vegetables in sead displays, catalogs and assort ments of seedling plants. They have no idea how much of themselves plant breeders put into new vsrieties. These highly educated plant scien tists are not just working for a paycheck You have to drag it out of them, but each realises how important their work is to feeding all the people of the world. Plant breeders are more than technicians because their jobs are among the most creative of all scientific disciplines. Many are All- America Selections judges, and they evaluate new varieties for home garden value. They look for good flavor, resistsnce to many disesses and i n s e c t s , h e a v y production snd efficient plants. They know what they are doing, so when you see that All- America award symbol, you can be sure that variety is the best in its class.
