Doherty's, e teem which never quits, played their usual style of come-from-behind bell with e dramatic ten-inning 6-5 win over Peer Inn. The drama was only highlighted by the fact that the Johnsburg Businessmen had already won their two bellgames on the evening and a Doherty's loss would put both clubs in a deadlock for first place and give the Businessmen e bye in the first round of the playoffs which begins this week. Peer Inn opened the scoring in the . extra inning affeir by scoring two runs in the top of the fourth inning on e two-run single byRich Jablonski. Up to that point, neither teem managed a runner to second base as both teams had only one single to show. Key defensive plays, one by Doherty's Mike Rogers in center field, and another by Peer Inn's Gsry Guetzloff in center field, took away potential extra base hits to rob the other team. Doherty i scored their first run in the bottom of inning four. Rogers, who has not had the kind of season st the plate that he's had in the past, forgot about the rest of the seeson and slammed a lea doff triple to the fence. Rogers, who would go 4-for-4 in this key game (and 9-for-ll in his last three contests;, scored on. Randy Vauk's grounder to shortstop. The Sneck Shop pushed three more runs across in the sixth to take a H lead. With two outs. Bob Michels doubled and scored on Doug Ooffhng's base hit. Jsbkmeki followed with an inside-the-park homer to bring -In Oeffling. For Jablomki, that was Us third strsight hit end fourth RBI. But beck came Doherty's in thsir half of the sixth. Successive singles by pinch hittecs Tom Roech and Jim Wayman plus an RBI single by Rogers started the rally going. After a fielders choice, both Irish end John DeCiccio delivered rim- scoring hits. Jerry "The Hammer" Brodin was intentionally walked to fill the beses and Steve Mai followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the score. In the Sneck Shop seventh, a two out double by Den McAuliffe put runners on second and third but they were both left stranded as the visitors lost a great chance to win the game. Peer Inn would never seriously three ten again over the next three extra innings while Doherty's, who kept "knocking et the door" in eech of the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings (leaving two runners stranded eech inning) waited until the tenth to score the game-winner. John and Irish DeCiccio both collected their third straight safeties of the game to open the tenth. Next up to the plate stepped "The Hammer' Brodin, who has led the western division in betting most of the seeson. It was a great spot for his first hit of the geme as he crunched a double to score John and give Doherty's a M victory. Brodin finished at J44 to rank second to the Rusty Nail's Dave Sundby. Jim Cook had two hits for Jewel Park. The Johneburg Businessmen looked more and more like the teem to beet es the playoffs open es they hem- mered both the Whole's Tell and the Rusty Nail Ion by scores of 12-0 end 12-1, respectively. The Teil bed to win to make the plsyoffs while e Neil victory would neve put Johneburg in third place. Nine of 10 Johnsburg starters hod two hits eech in game one: Jim Meyers, Don Bentx, Wayne Killer, Tom Spesojevich, John Meyers, Harry May, Phil Oeffling, Mark Schultz, and Brien DiBlaai. Again the opposition came up with only a ft half dozen hits with the RBI single being s dribbler to third by Gary Sch- mitt. Johnsburg on the other bend had three more hits in this contest (21) end scored one more run. Jim and John Meyers both went 4-for-4 to lead to offenee with John including a two-run triple. Don Bentz and Wayne HUler added three hits end Harry May and Mark Schultz had two hits end two RBI's each. Hasty Nail laa Johnsburg t -. v s The Rusty Nail did beet Little John's 14-4 in their first game, however. Although the Neil outfield play was a bit sloppy and Little John's matched the winners in total hits (14), the losers committed too many errors in the infield (6) which led to their downfall. Rick Wakitach had a big night for the Nail with a three-run double and a two-run home run. Dave Sundby went 3-for-3 to help himself to his first ever batting title. Doug Freund, Jim Zaaata, Kevin Freund, and Larry Jonee added two hits each for the winners. Jim Quinn, John Griffith, Pete Blackburn, Kip Novotney, Jim Grabowsld, and Gary McGregor had two hits each for Little John's. Both Quinn and Grabowski included inside-the-park-homers while Quinn hsd three RBI's altogether. An interesting sidelight is that Blackburn had a chance to win the eastern division batting title if he could go 3-for-3. He came cloee, getting two hits in hit first three at bats. round of the playoffs). lMschltMs Answer from Fri: The two p»yw* who heve hit Jtm or better since returning from their honeymoone this year are Tom Blennor (Huemann s) and Jim Ssamlewski (Lee ft Mary's).
