Hiller Wraps Up 16-Inch West Hiller Construction assured itself of the home team advantage throughout the playoffs by recording a pair of victories in men's 16-inch softball Thursday night. Hiller, which has paced the western division all season, racked up its 14th and 15th straight wins without a loss by recording a 7-0 forfeit win over Peer Inn and a hard fought 13-8 game over second place St. Regis Pub. Hiller can conclude its regular season schedule on a perfect note Thursday when it entertains D It E Millstream 76 in a 7:00 p.m. contest. Hiller overcame the absence of three key regulars - Jim Meyers, Myron Bentz, and Jeff Meyers - to defeat St. Regis for the second time this season. Tied 5-5 at the end of three inpings, the winners took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth as Mark Schultz and Bill Ganik drove in the go- ahead runs, then put the contest out of reach with a big six-run fifth inning. In that fifth inning, some daring baserunning helped put Hiller over the top. With Wayne Frantz coaching at third base. Hiller scored three runs all the way from first base on hits through the infield. Don Bentz and Wayne Hiller opened the frame with back to-back doubles and Schultz and Ganik ended the scoring with run- qwring singles St. Regis, after battling back with a five-run third inning, put three more on the board in the top of the seventh on three hits including Mike Peter sen's RBI triple But a double play ball with Bill Meyers on the front end of the twin killing helped to put an end to the Pub comeback Schultz and Ganik, the No. 9 and 10 men in the order, paced Hiller as each went 2-for-3 and combined for five RBI's Wayne Hiller added two hits and two RBI's, Don Bentz scored three runs, John Meyers tallied twice, and Phil Oeffling made the defensive play of the game with an over the shoulder catch at the fence in left field. Dan McAuliffe had his finest night at the plate for St. Regis with three straight singles. Mike Petersen doubled, tripled, and scored a pair of runs, Brian DiBlasi also scored twice, and Bob Michels starred defensively in right field. St. Regis Pub 9-0-5-0-0-9-3 - 8 Hiller Construction 2-0-3-2-4-0 • 13 St. Regis improved its record to 11- 4, however, and remained alone in second place in the West by turning back D k E Millstream 12-5. D k E took a 2-0 lead in the first inning as A1 Lyne and Dave Petersen collected RBI's on fly balls then tallied three more runs in the third highlighted by Tom Harazan's two- run single. But the Pub batted around in a six- run third inning then tacked on three more runs in each of the fourth and sixth innings to outdistance Millstream. Winning pitcher Dave Oeffling added the finishing touches ss he speared a line drive and turned it into an inning ending double play in the fourth then held the D k E offense without a hit over the last three in nings. Bob Michels went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI's to lead the Pub batters and regain the western division batting lead with his .584 average. Mike Petersen also had three hits including a triple and three runs scored. Jim Althoff, Dan McAuliffe, Brian Greve, and Dave Schmidt followed with two hits each and Schmidt socked his first homer of the season in the fourth inning. Mark Lyne led D k E going 2-for-3 with two runs scored. FCA-Palace Bowl, now 5-9, turned in one of the biggest upsets of the season by defeating playoff bound 3D- Bowl 15-12. The winners were actually outhit 16 to 9, but took advantage of 11 walks which opened the door to several big innings. FCA opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning, but 3D an swered with six runs on seven hits in their half of the frame Greg Murphy socked a two-run triple and uMike Gertz followed with a two-run homer as 3D-Bowl took a 6 2 lead. But Palace Bowl came back with six runs of its own on only two hits and a couple of errors to regain the lead then winning hurler Eric Wales held the potent 3D offense to one hit ov»>r the next three innings. The Rusty Nail scored four straight runs in the bottom of the seventh climaxed by Doug Freuncfs bases loaded single to beat Kiss It 11-11. And again it was Ron Lentine who scored the game winner as both Freund and Lentine shared the spotlight as heroes in the Nail first round playoff vic tories. The "rubber match" in the Nail- Kiss It three game series was s replay of games one and two. In all three games the eventual victor sped to an early inning lead only to see that lead vanish as the opponenet rallied to tie or take over the lead themselves. Rusty NaU took a 3-0 lead in the first as Rick Wakitsch slammed a two-run triple into the gap in center and then scored on Kevin Freund's single. Wakitsch along with first baseman Gary Schmitt each came up with sparkling defensive plays in the West End Pub second, robbing Tom Wallen and Rick Wiegman of sure base hits. But Wallen got even in the Pub fourth with an RBI single to narrow the gap to 3-1. The Nail batted around in their half of the fourth, scored six runs and looked like they had finished off the Pub A three run inside the park home run by Jim Zasada was the big blow. Doug Freund, Rick Wakitsch and Ron l.entine drove in solo runa. The Kiss It crew was not finished - in fact when the Nail brought their rally to a halt in the fifth seven more runs had crossed the plate and the score was 9-8 Pat Burke's bases loaded single plus Wayne Roewer's bad hop triple off Dave Sundby's forehead in left drove in four runs. Doc Wallen singled in Roewer and three batters later Terry Hovseth hit his second single in the inning good for the last two runs. It looked like the Rusty Nail would counter the Pub's fifth inning rally as they loaded the bases in their half of the fifth However, West End turned their second infield doubleplay of the game to end the threat. Pitcher Pat Burke, who started the doubleplay, put Kiss It in front for the first time with a two run shot over the left field fence in the sixth. Another doubleplay to stop a Nail sixth inning threat plus a two run seventh put West End Pub up 12-9. chuck Gandolfi and Tom Burke had the RBI hits Gary Schmitt tripled to lead off the Nail seventh John Connell singled in Schmitt, moved to second on a walk to Larry Jones and scored on Ron Lentine s base hit Dave Sundby, the league's top batter, was intentionally passed to fill the bases. Tourney Hrenda Pictor, defending champion of the MeHenry Women's Invitational Golf Tournament, finished a close second at the eighth annual event held last week at MeHenry Country Club Pictor, a former MeHenry resident who now plays out of Beaucleric Country Club in Jacksonville, Fla., fired a 84 on Thursday and a 76 Friday to finish at 160, one stroke behind medalist Jackie Cullman of Thor- ngate. For Cullman, it was her second championship in three weeks as she had earlier captured the Lake County Ladies ' Golf Tournament. At MeHenry. Cullman fired a 81 followed by a 78 for a two day total of 159. It was evening. ckson drove in Peer Inn-Jack's Wednesday's totals must have been even more frustrating for Peer Inn after both games totaled fewer runs and hits than in their opening 16-14 victory. But hitting is the name of the game and Johnsburg did a better job as they overcame a two run Snack Shop lead in the first and went on to win 9-4. Don Bentz, who led the league in home runs, RBI's and total hits, plus Tom Spasojevich were the Businessmen heroes. Both went 3-for- 3 as 'Spas' knocked in two runs while Bentz homered to lead off the third inning. Peer Inn did grab the lead but only for a half inning. In the first Doug Oeffling scored after a lea doff single followed by Bob Michels two out base hit and an outfield throwing error. Rich Jablonski drove in Michels with an RBI single. During the first. Johnsburg rightfielder Phil Oeffling made perhaps the most sensational defenisve play of the season. Oef- fling's running diving tumbling grab brought everyone from their seats. Then Johnsburg scored three runs to take the lead for good 'Spas' and Mark Schultz hit RBI singes while an infield error brought in another run. John Meyers hit a two out triple in the second to increase the Jot--burg lead to 4-1. Bentz's homer in the third plus Mark Schultz's second RBI hit of the contest made the score 6-1. Schultz was thrown out at thrid on Bob Michels great throw from t Michels second of the Peer Inn's Dave Jackson Gary Guetzloff in the Snack fourth But Tom 8pasojevich cut Oeffling's throw to the plate and turned the sacrifice into an liming ending doubleplay aa Joe Sullivan was out at second attempting to advance from first. Spas and Myron Bentz drove in a run each in the Businessmen fifth. In the sixth each team scared one run. Bob Michels leadoff double led to a run when Gary Guetzloff singled him in. Winning pitcher Wayne Frantz knocked in the final run when the "old professor" sacrificed in Phil Oeffling.
