But as "Texas" celebrates Its sec­ ond anniversary this month, it Is attye and kicking -- and quality-wise well on its way to becoming one of daytime's best soap operas,--. When the show debuted as a spinoff of "Another World." it almost creeted its own handicaps. Although the show was set In Houston, it taped in Brooklyn. Half the cast affected Texas twangs, while others' accents had no trace whatsoever of thl̂ South. Scenes written by the show's creators and first head writers, William and Joyce Corrlngton, were interminable -- almost as long as eight minutes each. Actors were hired and fired at such an alarming rate that it was almost impossi­ ble for viewers to keep track of all the characters. The show's turnaround began a year ago. when former "Days of Our Lives" actrees Gall Kobe was hired as executive producer. Mies Kobe was open to ideas and sugges­ tions from her actors and Jerry Lannlng the confidence she instilled in them resulted in much better performances. Among those outstand­ ing actors hirsd by Miss Kobe were Pam Long (Ashley Marshall) and David Forsythe (T. J. Canfield). Also hitting their stride along with these two actors in an electrifying love quadrangle are Carla Borelli (Reena Dekker) and Jerry Lanning (Justin Marshall). Despite all the improve­ ments, until recently "Texas" was always daytime's lowest rated show. Many felt this was because it was competing lh the same time slot as two of daytime's highest rated shows. ABC's v"General Hospital" and CBS' "Guid­ ing Light." But last April, NBC showed its savvy by switching "Texas" to a morning time slot where It would not be competing with any other soaps. ®a f
