Mr Webster's book lists the word as "a trademark for an early/type of phonograph". Early--probably too early for younger people to remember. Watch particularly for small children, who are unpredictable, difficult to see. and may dart unexpectedly in front of you. Adult crossing guards, often assisted by student safety patrol members, and police supervise many crossings for students going to and from school Always be alert for school signs, which are shaped like an old schoolhouse. School area signs warn of school grounds next to the roadway or established school crossings ahead. School crossing signs are erected at the crosswalk and where there are school crossing signals. Illinois law states the 20 mph speed limit is in effect on school days between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. when children are present and signs are Remember, however, that schools may hold classes at different hours and many ac tivities are held at night. It Leaves A Ring A farmer could substitute a bottle of plain ol' vegetable oil for diesel in his tractor fuel tank, but a researcher with the Texas AAM Food Protein Research and De velopment Center wouldn't recommend it. A diesel en gine may run on vegetable oil for a short time but the long-term effects offrhe'eiv gine could damage it be yond repair. The researcher is looking for ways to adapt farm machinery to run on oil from sunflowers, cotton or corn. times and can go back much farther than I can. I've heard hog-calling contest that sounded better than some singers on TV Working a crossword puzzle, I found the word glove as the answer for mitten. " Baloney! A glove has separate places for your fingers. A mitten has only your thumb separated. I should know about mittens. My mother and grandmother used to knit them for us. Not many were store- bought in those days. Further -- I maintain no glove was ever made that would keep your fingers as warm as a mitten. The weathermen have the best jobs: tfay after day. they predict "Partly sunny, partly cloudy". Even if they miss and bat .500, their average is good. OLD SAYING: "There is many a slip twixt the cup and the lip". The question has been put to me a few times-- "Now that you are retired, what do you do with your time?" That's a tough one to answer. Seems to me I am always busy. Of course, it doesn't take so much to keep me busy at this stage. A weekly calendar on my desk has memos of things to do every day of this week. Nothing earth shaking, but still something to look forward to each day Met Everett and Ethel Hunter Sunday. Long time since I shook hands with Ev. There wasn't time for a chat dr I would have asked him if he remem bered a basketball game of long ago when our high school team met the old grads in the little gym that is jfew Landmark School. We called ant little gym "the box car". Let me tell thee that putting 10 big fellows in that gym meant a rough time. None was ever rougher than the nighf I remember Ev, Henry Miller, Frankie Justen, Lester "Dutch" Bacon, Leonard Frett and others nearly murder us physically. You can't believe they beat us 9 U>6 in the greatest mass wrestling match ever seen. Not much scoring, but the crowd saw plenty of action. In those days not many fouls were called or there wouldn't have been any players left on the floor. Ed Barbian of our high school team, who was a better than average boxer, said after the game he took more punishment that night than he ever took in the ring. Evergreens usually root best when taken in late fall or early winter after they have been subjected to sev eral heavy frosts. Boxwood cuttings can be taken at any time. To root shrub cuttings, you will need a source of cuttings, a 6-inch flower pot for each " lG to XI cutungs, aplastic bag to cover it, and a rooting medium such as a mix of: one part clean sand and one part peat moss; or one part peat moss and one part vermicul ar, or one part perlite and 1 part vermiculite. Before taking cuttings, mix the rooting medium with e- nough water so a drop or two comes out when a handful is squeezed tightly. Fill the pot with the medium, then take the cutting. Cuttings should be 2 to 6 inches long. Strip the leaves from the lower half of the cutting and dip the base into a rooting stimulant. Al though the^ooting stimu lant is not necessary, it en courages root growth in some plants. If the shrubs have large leaves, reduce leaf size by one-half. Fill the flower pot with cuttings, sprinkleIhe cuttings lightly with water, then place in the plastic bag , and secure the top of the bag with a rubber band. Set the cuttings in a window ^where they will receive plenty >f light but no direct sun. Be- r the plastic bag makes a liature green house, the cuttings will need no water until they are well rooted. Cataract Signs. CHILD VISION Dr Milton Ross Q. Our youngster sees sta tionary spots, "ghost" im ages, and finds his vision im paired. What is the cause? A. Cataract (optification of the lens of the eye) is the probable condition. When substantial vision is lost, sur gery to remove the lens may be advised. Perforating in jury, systemic (i.e. diabetes), or ocular disease (i.e. con genital) is generally respons ible.
