In photo at left, a patient brought to the emergency depar tment it prepared for transfer via the Illinois Department of Tran sportation helicopter. The helicopter is based at St. An thony's in Rockford, and is staffed by flight nurses from that hospital. A beacon on the roof of McHenry hospital serves as a guide to the helicopter for emergency transport round-the clock. Patients may need rapid transfer due to severe burns, spinal injuries, or other medical emergencies requiring special ized procedures. Emergency department staff at a trouma center must be prepared to face virtually any situation. Helping patients be more comfortable and relaxed (right photo) is as important as assessing the medical emergency and alleviating pain. "The specialized training which emergency personnel must un dergo provides them with the technical skills to handle a wide range of problems, while their personal dedication makes patients feel comforted and secure. Restarting the engine wastes less gasoline than idling for a minute or more. An idling engine can use anywhere from one pint to one quart of gasoline every 15 minutes, depending on the size of the engine. In cold weather, start the engine and drive away-- slowly. Don't idle the engine to let it warm up. An engine will warm up more quickly while driving than by idling. There's one fact you can't escape: cold-engine starts tend to use more gasoline than starting in warm weather or after the engine is "already warm. A car that gives you 13M> miles per gallon in 70 degree F weather may give you only three miles per gallon when it is first started cold. In 10 degrees F weather, the fuel loss is even greater. And never fill your gasoline tank to the brim. Over-filling causes spillage, and leaves no room for expansion when the car warms up. So stop pumping gasoline when the automatic nozzle valve closes?* PAGE 19 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 17,1082 'jmm A Salute To Emergency Physicians^-Nurses McHenry hospital is saluting its emergency medicine physicians and enjergency nursing staff during the (tfeek of Sept. 12--18, to provide an opportunity for the public to learn more about this important aspect of health care. The week is sponsored across the nation by the American College of Emergency Physicians. As the newest medical specialty, emergency medicine is the practice of treating life or limb-threatening in juries and illnesses requiring im mediate attention. Emergency physicians are specialists who provide this treatment, as well as aiding all other patients who seek medical care in an emergency department. In the last 15 years, emergency medicine has made rapid advances, and was recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties in 1979. Because it is a local trauma center, McHenry hospital's emergency medical department must be staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by emergency medicine physicians. Emergency departments not staffed by these specialists cannot attain the status of trauma center, according to the State of Illinois Trauma System requirements. At McHenry hospital, the emergency department ip ptaffed by tHfe following emergency medicine physicians: Dr. George M. Gallant, chairman of the department of emergency medicine, Dr. John Bowman, Dr. Basavaraj"Hftt$lenne, Dr. Gary Harris, / Dr. Alex Jablonowski, Dr. Mart Jalakas, Dr. Arturo Meneses, Dr. Kalyanpur S. Mohan, Dr. Jolanta Peckus, Dr. Thomas Peeters, and Dr. Leslie Webber. Nineteen registered nurses are on the emergency staff, and are all Coronary Care Certified, RN II's, in order to work in the emergency department. The nurses must also pass an exam on mobile intensive care unit field protocol, as well as an exam on triage procedures. On th»» McHenry hospital emergency nursing staff, seven are trauma nurse specialists, six are certified in emergency nursing, and four have achieved certification in advanced cardiac life support. Grace Bentz, RN, is the manager of the emergency department. The medical staff of the emergency department are members of MESA, Medical Emergency Services Associates. MESA physicians staff the emergency departments at such major mspitals as St. Anthony's in Rockford, Victory Memorial in Waukegan, Northwest Community, in lit? Arlington Heights, St. Ann's and Loretto in Chicago, and Lakeland hospital in Elkhorn, Wis. A trauma center provides a hospital's patient service area with comprehensive, treatment because of the staff and facility capabilities. The severity and extent of the patients' injuries and illnesses are evaluated in the emergency department, and 4he training of the medical staff of a trauma center is geared to making rapid decisions on appropriate treatment for a wide range of medical problems. The emergency physician never knows what type of case will come into the emergency department. It could be the victim of an automobile or industrial accident, a patient sufering a cardiac arrest, or ^ child who has swallowed household detergent. Casefc of rape, child abuse, alcoholism, or other acts of violence, also face the emergency physician and staff. The Emergency physician decides on the appropriate treatment, the need for hospitalization, and the type of consultation which may be needed. In addition, they must calm worried family members and approach the patient with the attitude of caring professionals. Emergency physicians participate 'actively in 'continuing medical' education programs presented by the American College of Emergency Physicians. All active members are required to complete 150 hours of continuing medical education every three years. At least 60 of those hours must be approved by ACEP as providing knowledge specifically needed by emergency physicians. Emergency medicine also en compasses pre-hospital care, and in its capacity as a trauma center, McHenry hospital is responsible for the training of 14 area rescue squads. According to the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, Illinois leads the nation in registered EMT's, with this part of the state having the highest per capita ratio of emergency care personnel to the population In the 700-square mile area trained through McHenry hospital, there are mobile intensive care unit vehicles which can provide advanced life support to patients as they are being brought to a trauma center. Currently in the McHenry-Western Lake County system there are 113 certified paramedics, seven provisional paramedics, and 200 emergency medical technician-A's. In the entire United States, only 5 percent of am bulance attendants are certified paramedics, making the ratio here in northern Iliinois by "comparison.* • - * In Cook county there are 44 MICU vehicles to take care of 4 million people in 200 square miles. McHenry county and Western Lake county are protected by 24 MICU vehicles for a service area of 150,000 people, making this particular locale one of the best protected in the nation in terms of emergency care. Through the telemetry unit, the rescue squads with mobile intensive care units can provide advanced cardiac monitoring, defibrillation, drug therapy, and intervention to stabilize the patient. They are in constant contact with the emergency physician and the patient's vital signs are transmitted over radio channels to the emergency department. In terms of protection for the communities in its patient service area, McHenry hospital's emergency department provides three trauma beds, ability to stabilize trauma victims, with surgeons on call 24 hours each day, ability to treat pediatric emergencies, rapid helicopter access to a burn center, advanced technological equipment to treat victims of cardiopulmonary illnesses, medical and surgical intensive care units, coronary care unit and casting room. Also emergency dental equipment, emergency ophthalmology equip ment, fully-equipped laboratory and radiology departments, posindex - serves as a poison treatment center for the community, resource center for communicating with prehospital care providers, access to a rape crisis center, assistance for suspected child and spouse abuse cases, access to an alcohol rehabilitation unit, and resource' hospital for handling disasters in the community.
