Sept. 122,29 & Oct. 6,1982) No. 820409 GARDEN Moles Moles will eat almost any animal oi insect found in the soil that is large enough to eat and small enough so that it does not eat them first. The mainstays of a mole's diet are earthworms and insect grubs. It seldom, if ever, eats plant materials. Moles may cause some damage to plants by dislodging roots and bulbs as they dig through the soil looking for something to eat. Because moles eat insects and earthworms and not plant material, poison pea nuts or other baits are gen erally a waste of time and money. They can.be control led by eliminating their food supply (grubs and worms). Use a good soil insecticide such as Sevin or Diazinon, applied according to label directions. Do not expect overnight results. It will take some time for the material to leach into the soil and take effect, and for the mole to find out that there is nothing left to eat. Once his food supply is gone, the mole will be forced to look elsewhere for food. Moles also can be control led by trapping. Of all the mole traps on the market, the harpoon trap is probably easiest to use. These traps can be found at most local hardware or lawn and gar den shops. Complete direc tions for using harpoon traps generally come with each trap. The best time to trap is in the early spring when the first ridges are noted or after the first fall rains. Trapping is difficult in midsummer or in winter because moles are deep in the ground. Texas Turkey Known as "Texas turkey," armadillo meat is roasted over Texas campfires and is considered a great delicacy by Indians in Mexico: ~ Armadillos play a role in pest control, since insects are •heir favorite food, and they spend most waking hours rooting in ihe soil for beetles, ants, and grubs.
