This was the firct defeat ever for the Warriors on their home course. For the past four years the Warriors met foe after foe and emerged victorious Today, soldiers in the U.S. Army can talk with other soldiers as far away as 10,000 miles, using a small satellite communications radio! FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of October 6, 1932) John R. Knox, mayor of the city of McHenry, and prominent business man, died at his home on Riverside drive, Oct. 4, after an illness of several weeks. Since April, Mr. Knox has suffered from heart trouble which grew worse during the summer until August, when he went to St. Anthony hospital in Chicago for treatment. About Ttwo weeks ago he returned home, where he was under the care of a nurse/ Leonard Blank and Herbert Larson of Fox Lake are the new proprietors of the meat market in the M.J. Walsh building. A dance is to be given at the Bridge ballroom, McHenry, Oct. 12, spon sored by the McHenry County Democratic Central committee and the McHenry County Democratic club. Prof. Nye's Rhythm Aces will provide the music. The admission price will be 75 cents a couple. The committee consists of Henry Greely, chairman; and James Howell, Leo Dalby, Thos. A, Bolger, Claud Mc- Dermott, Val McCarthy and Earl Bower. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of October 8, 1942) The weather during September this year varied about as much as possible in 30 days. The temperature slid from a high of 88 degrees to a low of 26 which, after all, is pretty cold for early fall. The last week brought one of the coldest seven days for Sep tember on record. To make it even more wintry, snow fell for several hours on the twenty-fifth and many began counting the days until Christmas. After being inducted into the Army only two months ago, Albert Vales, who is stationed at Fort Sheridan, has been promoted to the rank of Private First Class. Private Norbert Mauch of Kansas City, Mo., spent a three-day furlough here the last of the week. Aviation Cadet George Johnson has finished his pre-flight training at Kelly Field, Tex., and is now at Spartan Field, Tulsa, Okla., for basic training. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of October 3, 1957) Little did Gerald Hettermann of Johnsburg, a sheriff's deputy, realize what widespread attention would focus on him when he carried out the duties of his office in making an arrest on a reckless driving charge. He was probably as surprised as anyone when the driver of the car he had followed for several miles turned out to be none other than the well known and highly publicized patrolman Jack Mueller, Chicago's champion traffic ticket writer. Miss Jean O'Brien of McHenry was one of three young women of the North-Northwest and North Suburban branch of the Chicago Dental Assistants association who became a certified dental assistant recently. She was capped at a candlelight ceremony in Chicago. r TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of October 6, 1972) After a thorough discussion with Attorney Sam Diamond and Chief Espey, the McHenry City Council voted to take a firm stand on D.W.I, driving. This concurs with request made by the state's attorney at a seminar held last week. _ McHenry's oldest business man, Peter M. Justen, 86, died Oct. 4, at his home on Elm street. Though semi- retired Mr. Justen was active in his place of business until the time of his unexpected death. He had spent his entire life in McHenry except for six years, in Denver, Colo. The "Running Warriors" finally were defeated on their home course at West campus by Barrington by a Concert Season To Open Community Concerts association of Crystal Lake has a solution to the problem of increasing ticket prices, long drives to concerts and babysit ting blues. Opening the season will be Evelyn Petros, mezzo-soprano, Oct. 2 Her appearance will be followed by duo- pianists Stecher and Horowitz in November Jar>k Daniels Original Silver Cornet band in February, and Carlo Curley, organ virtuoso, in April.
