In your home there are many substances that are toxic if they are swallowed or inhaled. The trick is knowing what these hazardous products are and the precautions to take to avoid the danger. You would probably be amazed at how many there are - not only drugs but also household cleaning products, such as bleach and ammonia, house plants, bug sprays, rodent killers, gasoline and kerosene. All of these items are safe if they are used and stored properly. The potential danger is related to the way we use them and store them. Carelessness, errors in judgment and lack of knowledge about proper storage, han dling and disposal are often the real causes of poisoning accidents. If you are a parent, you have to operate on the theory that a substance is poisonous until it is proven safe. Aspirin was at one time the most common childhood poisoning but since the advent of safety caps, plants, trees and shrubs have taken over the number- one spot. There are many plants that have been cul t iva ted for centuries which have poisonous leaves , berries, flowers, roots, stems or bark. Unfortunately, you can't tell if a plant is poisonous by either looking at it or tasting it. Some of our most beautiful and colorful flowers are the most So what can you do to protect your child who puts everything in his mouth? It is natural for toddlers to eat everything they can get their hands on. The only protection against any kind of poison during that stage is constant vigilance. Once they are beyond that stage, a parent should caution the child about the dangers of rating or drinking anything that is not given to them by you or another adult family member. Hang plants above the reach of children and store potentially hazardous products on high shelves, but remember that many children are climbers from an early age. The ideal situation is to store these products under lock and key and out of the reach of children where they are in use. If you can't afford to buy locks for all your cabinets, you might use old suitcases that can be locked, or a large wooden crate that can be fitted with a padlock. Another thing you might want to do, once the child is old enough to understand the symbol, is to put the yellow, "ugly-face" stickers on all potentially poisonous products. Many hardware stores are beginning to stock them, and they find that they are good sellers.
