The top * itching is crooked, corners are not luared and they are lumpy. I do use an iron for pressing. Can you help? A. There is a technique called mitering', in which two edges are joined diagonally to form a corner. Stitch along pocket seamlines. Then press seam allowances towards in side, along stitching. Open seam at corner with seam ripper. Press corner up diagonally and trim V' from diagonal crease. Turn seam allowances towards inside again. Folded edges will meet, forming a neat corner without bulk. Slipstitch hem edges together. P.O. BOX 447 2505 N. RINGWOOD RD. McHENRY, ILL. 60050 BY BRUCE T. OTTO by Bruce T. Otto Public Relations Officer Continuing Agent Orange Series Q. - What kinds of health problems are being reported by veterans? A. - Veterans have reported a wide range of symptoms, many of which relate to skin problems. Most of the other problems are of a non-specific nature suctr as headache, loss of drive, irritability and change of personality. These general symptoms do not focus on any specific diseases or organ svstems. The numerous search efforts being conducted both inside and outside the federal government should provide some definite answers as to whether or not health problems among veterans are the result of service in Vietnam. Q. - Has any evidence been found that medical problems were actually caused by exposure to Agent Orange? A. - At present, the best available scientific evidence iaiis to indicate that exposure to Agent Orange Or other herbicides used in Vietnam has caused any long term health problems for veterans or their children. One effect sometimes observed after dioxin exposure is a skin disorder, called chloracne, which in appearance resembles some common forms of acne. While some of the people exposed to dioxin in industrial accidents developed chloracne almost immediately, this reaction has not been firmly established among Vietnam veterans. Q. - What is the purpose of the VA Agent Orange Registry? A. - The registry represents VA efforts to identify all Vietnam veterans who are worried about the possible health effects of exposure to Agent Orange and to find out what types of medical problems they are experiencing. Veterans are provided a free physical examination and medical advice based on their current state of health. The registry serves as a mechanism to provide follow-up with these veterans should significant information develop. 51 Q. - Will the Agent Orange Registry examination show whether a veteran has been or will be adversely affected by Agent Orange? A. - Since relatively little is known at present about the possible delayed affects of Agent Orange exposure on humans, the examination cannot establish a definite connection in an individual. Answers must await the :iVesults of on-going research. The examination will help to detect any illness or injury the veteran may have, regardless of origin, and may provide a basis for treatment. No characteristic symptoms or diseases have been noted among a significant number of the veterans undergoing registry examinations. McHenry Girl In Government School Internship Program proximately 30 school districts and 21 states. Nearly 6,000 students in the country participate each year. The students who apply for the program go through several levels of screening. They interview with their local superintendent, the Educational. Service region superintendent and* finally, with a state-wide selection ^ committee. This committee is com-1 posed of educators as well as ~ representatives of state government. The students who are selected as interns take a full- semester's sab batical from regular studies. The Governmental Internship program enables high school seniors to explore career opportunities with an' executive in government agencies and related organizations. Interns attend policy meetings, prepare memoranda and reports, and occasionally travel ~ with their sponsors. Interns work regular business hours with their sponsor Monday through Thursday. On Fridays, all of the in terns meet for seminars on executive behavior and organizational analysis, in which they discuss materials they have read. They sometimes meet with officials and make site visits to programs in operation. Hence, the program is a marriage of the theoretical and the practical, com bining the best elements of classroom analysis with actual experience in the world of executives and organizations.
