PAGE4 TLAINDC VI f H- WEDNESDAY.OCTOBERS, 1982 EARL WALSH So I Hear Life isn't always a bed of roses, but a couple of nice letters received the past week are enough to buoy me up and send me off and wingin'. The lesson to me is if I have something good to say to or about somebody -- do it now. Don't wait to say those good things about somebody after lie or she dies. "Bobby" May let me know the MCHS girls played basketball in 1925, contrary to my recollection. I don't know who they played unelss the Barreville Bloomer Girls and can't find it in the records. Sure enough, when I looked in Alvina's year book, there was the name Olive Vasey (that's Bobby) listed as a basketball player. Way back in the year 1925. That is too far back for me to remember! Cool weather, then temperatures in the 80's. Custom, styles and you-know- who dictate that straw hats are out after Labor Day. I don't believe in those customs. Why not dress for the weather instead of the calendar? If it should by some freak of nature go down to zero in July, put on your long drawers. SUDDEN THOUGHT: Sometimes I get some weird thoughts I can't even understand myself. Just thinking. I like hamburgers any old time, except for breakfast. So do most kids. They also have strong leanings toward peanut butter and jelly. Wonder which would win in .a contest? I dunno. Just thinking. Didn't think it possible, but "Biff Meyer and Pat Borcovan of the Plaindealer staff, both sent me papers that aren't too complimentary of Cub fans and Cub players. Both of them are Cub fans. Don't throw in the towel. Wait 'til next year and an All-Chicago World Series. Retirement sometimes throws a fellow for a loss. Nancy Fike to come to our house at 9 o'clock Thursday morning to review some old time events and buildings. It was marked on our weekly calendar. The door bell rang and there was Nancy and Everett Thomas. And there was I! -- Pajamas and robe, unwashed and unshaven. No hurry so we sat, sipped coffec and talked, forgetting the ap pointment. Nancy, good scout that she is, put me at ease. Everett had a tape recorder. Good thing I wasn't on candid camera. After a summer as McHenryites, the Walter Careys have headed back to the warmth and sunshine of Florida. That now famous column written by Mike certainly put a tag on me. Gleefully, Tom Bolger remarked, "Here comes that old man". Stopped to say hello to the Wakitsch - Olson group Friday night at McHenry Country Club. When Jerry mentioned my column about backing out of our driveway, John Olson recalled delivering newspapers in our neighborhood when he was a boy. Also met John Lawrence, who was on his way to visit Chuck Hiller at Johnsburg. With the Cardinals in Chicago, Chuck had a chance to get back to his home town. John was pulling for a St. Louis- Milwaukee world series. Me, too. Tony Corcoran just returned from a visit to his native Scotland and seems to have picked up a Scottish accent. Arnold Rauen is recovering nicely from an aching back in spite of his refusal to allow me to give him a treatment. We knew there was something missing at Bimbo's. Nojv we know. The Hesters have beetf absent, but came back. Our girl, Debbie, and Aunt Lucille were in the foursome. There is npthing like when old friends meet. Met Mike Wieser and his wife--he didn't mention the Cubs. Maybe a general reference to all Chicago teams, but he couldn't bear to mention the name of his favorite team. "Chuck" Weingart reports a poor crop of hickory nuts this year. liiat must be some kind of a sign. Anybody know? Columnist Happy Husband's Home Your correspondent is singing that •oldie byt goodie'- "It's so nice to have a man around After 31 days of hospitals, husband Bruno is home recuperating. These weeks have been a time of deep concern, with the helplessness of seeing a loved one in pain and not being able to ease it. Prayerfully, Bruno will soon be up and about, sharing the stories of this operation with his cronies.
