Last Thursday, during McHenry first and only home meet of the season against Crystal Lake South and Crown, the Warriors defeated both South and Crown. The girls defeated South, but lost to Crown 28-29. Saturday was the Crystal Lake- Grant Invitational at Veterans Acres in Crystal Lake. Races were separated by classes -- seniors, juniors, sophomores and freshmen and the girls had one race. Benet was the overall winner with 496 points in the 14 team race. McHenry was second with 541 points, Crystal Lake South was third with 664, Antioch fourth with 666 and Crystal Lake Central was fifth with 742. Steve Carby, Chris Cruetz and Delia Saunders captured first place finishes in their respective races. John sburg's, Jay Jackson was first to cross the finish line in the senior race. "We did as well as expected," said McHenry Coach, Bill Hutchinson. "When they split everybody, it's tough. "Steve Carby is going to be tough to beat." Carby turned in the top time of the day with a 16:28.3 on the 5,000 meter course in the junior race. Carby was also the top finisher in Thursday's race with a 15:38. Brian Wright placed third at 17:13.0 and Marty Koleno was fourth at 18:20 for McHenry in the junior races. Chris Tennison was 42nd for Johnsburg at 20:40.1. Hutchinson also said Delia Saun ders is going to be tough to beat. She placed first in the meet Thursday with a time of 12:30 and captured the girls' race with a time of 13:22.6 on the 3,500 meter course. Pam Bradley was sixth for McHenry with a time of 14:06.4. Bob Texidore, coach of Johnsburg, was very pleased with the per formance of Jackson. "He did O.K. He would have liked to have done better. He had a cold and he hasn't recovered fully," he said. Texidore was also quite pleased with the performance of Jim Leon. He finished fifth in the senior race with a time of 18:00.4. "He did an outstanding job. He has just improved tremendously. This is his first year in cross country and he doesn't have the experience. He hasn't set his goals high enough. He said he wanted to finish in the top 20 before the meet. Other top finishers for Johnsburg were; Mike Lawrence in the sophomore with a time of 18:53.6 for 12th place and Jeff Nichols with a time of 19:04.3 for 15th place in the sophomore race.
