The' McHenry Plaindealer 6port& PAGE 6 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, OCTOBER 8,1982 Warrior Golfers Capture FVC Title By 20 Strokes HARVARD -- McHenry's Kirk Barnicle shot a 75 to earn medalist honors and lead his teammates to the Fox Valley Conference golf title, in a meet held Tuesday at Plum Tree Golf Course. Barnicle was one of five Warrior golfers to place in the top eight. Dundee's Jeff Horn was second with a 76, followed by McHenry's Brad Adams, who shot a 77. The Warriors' Tom Neuman, Steve Svec and Chris Berhing each shot a 79 as did Crystal Lake Central's Darren Gambrill and John Grippa. The Warriors carded a 310 to defend its FVC title. The nearest competitor, Crystal Lake South shot a 330. Despite that hefty edge, some of the Warrior golfers were a bit unhappy with their scores, but Coach Chuck Cuda was very happy with the scores. t "Always happy to win," said Cuda. "Some of the kids were not too happy with their scores, but we're very happy to win by 20 strokes. You v always want to do better. "I don't think they have reached their peak. I think they still can do ,* better. They just made some mental mistakes." Crystal Lake Central finished third with a score of 331, Dundee was fourth with 336, Jacobs fifth at 349, Cary- Grove sixth at 359, Crown seventh at 382 and Woodstock eighth at 425. When asked if he figured on finishing 20 strokes better than the rest of the conference, Cuda said, "honestly no. I knew we had the potential and we are a very strong team. "I think the other teams were, surprised or maybe disappointed. Maybe their kids didn't shoot very well for them. The eight FVC teams, along with Elgin and Elgin Larkin will get together again on Thursday for class AA state tournament district com petition at McHenry Country Club. One Down And Three To Go For Golfers Congratulations to Coach Chuck Cuda and his fine golf team on winning the Fox Valley Conference Title for the second year in a row. The Warriors finished its dual season play undefeated, won the Crown Invitational, placed second in the Lake Forest Invitational last week and Tuesday took conference Still awaiting the Warriors is the district, which was held yesterday at McHenry Country Club. Unless a complete disaster takes place, the Warriors shoula be in the sectional next week. It was the Warriors seventh conference title in the past 13 years, including competition in the always tough North Suburban Conference. We are hoping the popular coach and his team will take a few days off in the near future and make a trip to Springfield for the state finals. Bill Hutchinson's "Running Warriors" did a fine job last Saturday at Veterans Acres in the Grant-Central Invitational. The Warriors finished second overall and had three individual winners for the day. Delia Saunders won the girls event, Chris Creutz (ill could only keep him quiet in homeroom) won the sophomore division by many yards and the one whom I am with "win or tie" Steve Carby, won the junior division, defeating an old rival, Jim - Lane of the Tigers by a wide margin. The Warriors travel to Peoria tomorrow for the Peoria Invitational where they will compete with 44 of the states best teams. Warrior fans are wishing them the best of luck. Speaking of cross country ; a former Warrior, Wade Cepulis as a freshmen, is the number seven man on the University of Illinois team. Tonight is Warrior homecoming. Each year a large number of grads return to McCracken Field hoping the Warriors will win one for the On The Sidelines By Dick Rabbitt "grads." Coach Joe Schlender has promised the Warriors will do everything in its power to please the returning grads. Last week at Central, the Warriors seemed to be snake bitten. A 73 yard run by Mladen Rudman was called back on a very questionable holding penalty. A couple of intercepted passes and a miscue on a n»nt near the goal line during the second half led its downfall. If the Warriors can put it all together ton igh t f o r fou r qua r t e r s , t hey wi l l make a lo t o f , people happy. Pam Shaffer's volleyball team has shown a lot of improvement over the past month. With only three returning lettermen, the Warriors have had a struggle during its first half of the over the Dundee Cardunal? ball last week, a clean sweep of would be a I'll pick the Warriors to bounce back an hand the Vikings its fifth straight loss before what I hope is a big homecomming crowd. In a tough one, I'll also pick Dundee to rebound with a win over undefeated Crystal Lake South. The Streaks to breeze along over Cary-Grove and Central to tame the Golden Eagles of Jacobs. The Skyhawks to defeat the Bulldogs of Grant for its first win of the season. That tough loss last week at Grayslake left a bad taste in the mouth of the Johnsburg crew. The Hurricanes of Marian to defeat Harvard. to meet a lot of you grads at the game Hope night. Warriors Hope To Break Homecoming Jinx DICK RABBITT It has been a long time. The year 1971' to be exact. That was the last time a Warrior football team won a homecoming football game. Tonight the Warriors of Joe Schlender hope to break the jinx, that has haunted the Warriors for the past 10 years. t With all conference tailback Bob Grant returning and the addition of "Jumping George" Scott, the Vikings have two of the fastest backs in this part of the state. Grant gained over 1,000 yards last season as a junior and Scott the sophomore sensation last season gained 1,400 yards and scored 18 touchdowns. Senior signal caller Kent Brezinski at 5-10 and 170 pounds, is another scatback. This year the Vikings sacrificed size for speed in the line. Scott Geary is at one end at 6-1 and 189 pounds and his partner at the other end is Bob Skillman at 5-10, 160 pounds. Pat Scully at 180 pounds, is one tackle along with Scott Olson at 170 pounds. The guards are Paul Hudik and Dan Gruber. The pivot will be handled by senior Tom Meyers. Both teams are recovering from defeats last weekend. The Warriors on the rebound from a 28-7 loss to Crystal Swimmers Lose s*Dual To Conant The Conant swimming team defeated the McHenry Warriors 50-70 at the West Campus swimming pool Tuesday. Terri Blume led the Warriors with two individual firsts and was part of the 400 yard freestyle relay that captured first place. Blume captured the 200 yard freestyle with a 2:17.2 and the 100 yard freestyle with a 1:04.98. Peg Chilvers was second in the 200 yard freestyle with a 2:33.4 and Monique Betancourt took a second in the 100 yard freestyle with a 1:05.23. diving competition, Gina Jern- rg was able to capture first place with 129.2 points. In the 100 yard breaststroke, Gail Petty was also able to capture a first place with a time of 1:25.56. The 400 yard relay team that cap tured a first place finish was timed at 4:29.04. Other members besides Blume were; Chilvers, Betancourt and Danielle Johnson. Johnson also placed second in the 100 yard breaststroke at 1:18.88. bCTg Lake Central and the Vikes from a 28- 12 pasting from Woodstock. "Even though they are winless, they played very good football," said Schlender on the Vikings. "We are winless in the conference and we will be very hungry for a win also. "They have a ball control offense and we're going to try to establish ball control over them. They have a good defense and we can't just run. We'll have to pass and run to win the ballgame. We hope to run a balance attack." The Warriors are bound and determine to break the so-called homecoming jinx. With the squad at full strength, Schlender said. "We are going to give the fans something to clebrate for homecoming." The Warriors played a fine first half last week, but then a few costly mistakes led to the downfall. With the running of Lane, Milinac and Rud man, and the surprise of signal caller, Mike Love as a runner, has given the Warriors a potent running attack. Schlender says the Warriors will continue to use Love as a major ball carrier if needed. "If they defense against the other backs and let the quarterback free, we'll take ad vantage of that." WINNING DIVER -- Gina Jernberg is preparing to take one of her winning dives-during a meet against Conant at the McHenry West High School pool. Jernberg won the diving competition with 129.2 points. STAFF PHOTO -- WAYNE GAYLORD Volleyball Spikers Defeat Antioch, But Lose To FVC Foe The McHenry volleyball team opened up a heavy week of volleyball action with a split in two matches played. The Warriors were scheduled to play three matches in four days. The first opponent was non- conference foe, Antioch. It took three games for the Warriors to defeat the Sequoits. The Warriors won the first game 15-12, but lost the second 12-15 and bounced back to take the third game 17-15. The Warriors blew a 14-4 lead, before finally winning. The loss came on Tuesday to the Woodstock Blue Streaks. The Blue Streaks won both matches 15-12 and 15-10. The Warriors are now 3-8 overall. Warrior coach, Pam Shaffer, feels her team has improved 100 percent over the past few weeks. "They played a good game -- we're just not consistent," Schaffer said. "We started with some kids with volleyball experience, but not used to playing with each other. We just have to work on being consistent. "Volleyball leads change so fast. It wasn't a good game, but it wasn't a bad game. Tliey (Woodstock) have some real tall girls who can spike the ball." In the first game against Wood stock, Andee Norton served in 11 of the Warriors 12 points. She served three more in the second game for a total of 14 points in the two games. Shaffer said Andee Norton and Kelly Pierce played very good games agaisnt Antioch. The Warriors travel to Dundee, Thursday. Marian Loses Two Matches The Marian volleyball team lost to Benet Academy in two games, 2-15 and 7-15. Benet is in second place in the West Suburban Catholic Con ference with only ope loss. Beth Penza led the Hurricane scoring attack with three points. Holly Ryan scored one point and had three kills. Wednesday, the Hurricanes lost to Montini 13-15 and 10-15. Holly Ryan was the leading scorer with 11 points and ope kill. The Hurricanes are now 5-9 overall and 2-6 in the conference. The junior varsity also lost to Benet, 3-15 and 2- 15. Skyhawks Closer To 1st The Johnsburg Skyhawk volleyball team took one step closer to first place, by defeating the Northwest Suburban Conference first place team, Grayslake Tuesday at Johnsburg. The Skyhawks won the first game 15-8 and the second game 15-10. Gravslake now only has a one game lead over the Skyhawks who own a 6-3 record and a 8-4 overall record.
