DEATHS VINCENT ADAMS Vincent H. Adams, 70, of McHenry, died Monday, Oct. 11, while a patient at McHenry hospital. He was born March 1,1912, in Johnsburg, the son of Jacob and Anna (Freund) Adams. Mr. Adams attended Johnsburg schools; worked for Tonyan Brothers, Inc. of McHenry for 37 years, as an operating engineer; was employed two years at the Adams Brothers Steel Division of McHenry; and had been a Third Ward City of McHenry Alderman, serving from April of 1977 until April of 1961. A member of the Church of St. Mary of the Assumption, singing on the Senior Choir for many years, Mr. Adams was a 50-year member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1288, McHenry, where he became a 4th Degree Knight of Sishop Boylan Assembly; served two terms as Grand Knight and two terms as District Deputy. Surviving are his wife Pauline (Herdrich) whom he married 42 years ago, on Jan. 20,1940; a son Vincent J. (Diane) Adams, Sr.; a grandson Vincent J., Jr.; and a granddaughter Renee. Also surviving are five brothers, Joseph and OttO of Johnsburg, Nick and Alex of McHenry, and Clemens of Yellville, Ark..; and a father-in-law, Emil Herdrich of McHenry. He was preceded in death by both parents; a sister Genevieve Adams in' 1933; and two brothers, Matt in 1972 and Alfons "Duke" in 1965. A Funeral Mass will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in the Church of St. Mary of the Assumption, with Father Schott officiating, and in­ terment in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the George R. Justen & Son funeral home. Memorials would be appreciated in his name to St. Labre Indian Mission, Ashland, Mont. JOHN RATKE ' i-V J0*113 E. Ratke, 62, of McHenry, died " ^ Monday, Oct. II, at McHenry hospital. He was born in Chicago Aug. 27,1920, the son of Stephen and Julia Ratke. Surviving are his forma- wife, Lois Ratke of Des Plaines; three sons, Stephen of Carpentersville, Edmund and John of McHenry; four daughters, Mrs. Frank (Sandra) ' Dumelle of Round Lake, Mrs. Mike (Julie) Barney of Itasca, Marie Ratke of McHenry and Jean Ratke of Des Plaines; nine grandchildren; and a sister Victoria Swidergal of Chicago. Visitation was scheduled from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Oehler funeral home, Lee at Perry streets, Des Plaines. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wed­ nesday at the funeral home chapel. LUDWIG ORTLIEB Ludwig Ortlieb of McHenry died Monday, Oct. 11, at McHenry hospital. He was 70 years old, born in Poland Feb. 19, 1912. Mr. Ortlieb lived in McHenry about 13 years and was a retired carpenter. Surviving are his wife Egima <Hintz); two daughters, Mrs. Steve (Alice) Gounis of Chicago and Mrs. Arnold (Emily) Kloepfer of McHenry; and three grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are pending at the Peter M. Justen & Son funeral home. STEVE MIZIALKO Steve Mizialko of 7719 Beach drive, Wonder Lake, died Monday, Oct. 11, at North Chicago Veterans Ad­ ministration hospital. Arrangements are incomplete at press time at Freund funeral home, Wonder Lake. ARTHUR REYNOLDS Arthur L. Reynolds of McHenry died Sunday, Oct. 10, at McHenry hospital. He was 92 years old, born April 23, 1890, in Brockton, Mass. Mr. Reynolds lived in McHenry about eight years, having come from Chicago. He was a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. Surviving are his wife Rose Mary (Ellermann); a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Donna Jane) Schneider of Los Gatos, Calif.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was the brother-in-law of Florence and Harry Lynn of McHenry, who also survive. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, at the Church of St. Mary of the Assumption, McHenry, with burial in Ridgewood cemetery, Des Plaines. Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Peter M. Justen & Son funeral home. The family would like memorials to the McHenry Area Rescue Squad. ALICE ONTIVEROS Alice I. Ontiveros, 73, of McHenry, died Sunday, Oct. 10, at McHenry hospital. She was born Sept. 27, 1909, in Oklahoma, the daughter of William and Lucy Rush. A resident of the McHenry area since March of 1982, Mrs. Ontiveros was formerly of Mid West City, Okla. for over 50 years. She had been a seamstress in Oklahoma City most of her life. Survivors are three sons, Robert Dawdy of McHenry; William of Conroe, Tex. and Robert Ontiveros of Oklahoma City; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother Fred Rush of Joplin, Mo.; and three sisters, Exie Martin of Wanett, Okla., Stella Hodgson and Margie Rush, both of Indio, Calif. She was preceded in death by two husbands, George E. Dawdy in 1932 and Isadore Ontiveros in 1979; and one grandson, Maxwell Dawdy, Oct. 1, 1982. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at the George R. Justen & Son funeral home, with the Rev. Thomas Lowery of the First United Methodist church officiating and interment in Woodland cemetery. Visitation was scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. SUSAN HILLER Susan Hiller of Johnsburg died Friday, Oct. 8, at McHenry hospital. She was 83 years old, born in John­ sburg Aug. 2, 1899, the daughter of John M. and Elizabeth (Thelen) Sch- mitt. A resident of the Johnsburg area all her life, Mrs. Hiller was a member of St. Agatha Court No. 777, W.C.O.F., Johnsburg and Blessed Virgin Sodality of St. John the Baptist Catholic church, Johnsburg. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Tony, Albert and Emil. A Funeral Mass was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, at St. John's, with her son, Father Everett Hiller officiating, and burial in the church cemetery. Friends called from 3 to 6 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, at the Peter M. Justen & Son funeral home. The family would appreciate memorials to St. John the Baptist church. WALTER KREPEL Walter L. Krepel of McHenry died Thursday, Oct. 7, at McHenry hospital. He was 83 years old, born in McHenry Aug. 25,1899, the son of Otto and Henrietta (Baltke) Krepel. Mr. Krepel lived in the McHenry area all his life and was a retired dairy farmer. Surviving are his wife Agnes (Peve) whom he married fifty-five years ago, on April 29, 1927; Three daughters, Mrs. Mary Stockwell of McHenry, Mrs. Richard (Elsie) Hawkins of Ogema, Wis. and Mrs. Robert (Martha) Hawkins of Renton, Wash.; two sons, Leo of Elgin and Alfred of McHenry; 31 grandchildren; 29 Great-great-grandchildren; and a brother Henry Krepel of Crystal Lake. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Peter M. Justen & Son funeral home, with the Reverend Herman\Graef of Zion Lutheran church, McHenry officiating, and burial in McHenry County Memorial Park, Woodstock, 111. Friends called from 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday. RUBY CROWLEY Ruby Crowley of McHenry, died Thursday, Oct. 7, at Royal Terrace Nursing Home, McHenry. She was 79 years old, born April 3, 1903, in Georgetown, Ky., the daughter of Joseph and Marguerite (Le Mons) Wagner. Surviving are her husband Chester; a son Joseph Benoche of McHenry; one daughter, Mrs. Bernard (Patricia) Bennett of Clarendon Hills, 111.; a step-daughter Lanita Glenn of Oak Park; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister Lucy Ann Wagner of Phoenix, Ariz. Funeral services and burial were private. Arrangements were handled by the Peter M. Justen & Son funeral home. Memorial contributions would be appreciated to the Johnsburg Rescue Squad. JOHN BREFELD John Henry Brefeld, 82, of Waukegan, 111. died Oct. 5, in St. Therese hospital, following a lingering illness. He was born Sept. 6, 1900 in McHenry, and moved Co Waukegan in 1918. Mr. Brefeld retired from Feinberg's Store for Men in August, 1981. He was a member of the Immaculate Con­ ception church of Waukegan where he was a member of the Holy Name Society and served as an usher for over 50 years. He also belonged to the Swedish Glee club, Elks club and Exchange club. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, PAGE 3 - PLAINDEALER Lona (Wadsworth); two daugniers, Mrs. Louis (Norma) Mocogni of Lake Bluff and Mrs. Edward (Joan) Kroll of Waukegan; one son, John of Win- neconne, Wis.; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three brothers, Edward of Chicago, Paul and Joseph of McHenry; four sisters, Theresa Malcor of Arlington Heights, Mary Kearns of Mountain Home, Ark., Olga Carpenter of Chicago and Viola Brda of McHenry. He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Margaret (WirfS) Brefeld, formerly of McHenry. A Funeral Mass was held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, at the Immaculate Conception church. Friends called at the Marsh Funeral Home, Waukegan, from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and in­ terment was in Ascension cemetery, Libertyville. • Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society of Lake County in his name. OCTORERI3.I982 McHenry American Legion Auxiliary Mrs. Leona Best of Collinsville, Department President of the American Legion Auxiliary, will be traveling throughout the state, presenting a workshop featuring the programs of the auxiliary for the 1982- 83 administrative year as outlined by the state program chairmen. She has chosen as her theme, "Share Your Love Through Service" with planned emphasis on the purposes, programs and potential of the American Legion Auxiliary. Mrs. Best will be assisted by Irene Lofton of Champaign, Department First Vice-President and Legislative chairman; Helen Malanoski of Tamaroa, Department Membership chairman; and the 2nd Division President, Rita Thompson of Sheridan. District President, Jamie Wesley of Joliet, and members of the 11th district will welcome the caravan participants to the Fall convention on Oct. 17, at the Wheaton post home. Members of Unit No. 76 will be in charge of local arrangements. The 11th district includes DuPage, Kane, McHenry and Will counties. Members of the McHenry Unit No. 491 who will be attending the caravan and Fall convention will be President Maria Guettler; Pearl Cooper, llth District Public Relations chairman; and Dottie Messer, Constitution and By-Laws chairman. Green street, McHenry, is planning its third annual Holiday Hap­ pening Bazaar to be held at the church Saturday, Oct. 30, beginning at 9 a.m. The event will feature Christmas items, a Baby-Infant booth, General store, Christian Book store, Bake sale, and Candy store. The Tea Room will be hosted by women of the church and coffee, tea, punch, and sweets will be served throughout the morning, followed by a hot lunch. Another attraction will be a personalized Bread Dough Ornament booth where - ornaments of one's choice can be personalized when purchased. To celebrate Halloween, there will be Bazaar c l o w n s m i n g l i a g through the crowd, entertaining children with toys and making balloon animals. Also, a photographer will be on hand to take pictures of the children in their Halloween costumes. Weather permitting, the Luther Leaguers of Shepherd of the Hills will wash cars as patrons shop at the bazaar. Proceeds from the car wash will be used to finance Luther League activities.
