Among the elite 15, are the McHenry Warriors. Charlie Cuda, the Warrior coach, feels this is his best team ever and is hoping for a better finish than the third place in 1977. Althougbhe won't admit it to the press, he knows his team can possibly come away with a state title. That would only be fitting for a team that scored a 290 in the regional* for a first place at the McHenry Country club and captured the £ake Forest sectionals. To bring home a state title, the Warriors will have to beat the state's best golfing teams. New Trier will be one of those teams. New Trier captured the Hersey Sectional with a score of 311. The Warriors carded a 314 at Lake Forest And right behind New Trier were Glenbrook South and Loyola Academy at 313. Individually, the Warriors will have to battle such golfers as Mike Jonas of Bufflo Grove who carded a 73 and Steve O'Bryan of New Trier at 74. Sandy Thompson of Loyola Academy carded a 75. "There will be a lot of good teams," said Cuda. "We always felt we had a top notch club. We do have a good chance this time." New Trier did turn in the top sectional score, but Cuda says that doesn't mean anything. "It depends on the course. We had a strong wind off the lake." DICKRABBITT , The McHenry Warriors hope to rebound tomorrow afternoon from its defeat to Crown last week and win their first conference game of the season at Cary-Grove. One can only recall last year's game, when, the Warriors won on a last second pass from Mullen to Rudman that covered 90 yards to defeat the Fox Valley champs 18-14. The Trojans under a new coach; Mike Buck, a newcomer to the area from Michigan, are winless this season. The defending FVC champs have a young team and have to rely on a lot of juniors, which up to this time, has given them a lot of trouble. The Trojans have some experience to go along with the youngsters. Bob Murphy, a senior quarterback, is a returning letterman and according to Buck has adapted to some changes made this season. Dave Helmer at 5- 11 and 190 pounds is the running back that gets the call the majority of the time. Other backs are Matt Erickson and Dave Stauffer, both juniors. The weak spot in the Trojan attack, according to Buck is the lack of depth in the offensive line. Hurdle With First Place MIKE LAMB LAKE FOREST -- The McHenry Warrior golf team cleared the last hurdle to qualify for the state tour­ nament with a first place finish in the Lake Forest class AA sectional held at Lake Bluff Golf Club. The Warriors traveled down to Peoria 111. Wednesday evening to prepare for the Illinois High School Association State tournament held Friday and Saturday. s' "This, is the first time since I have been in McHenry we have finished first as a team in the sectionals. The lowest score was turned in by Jeff Hartman of Freeport and Darren Stanek of Jacobs with 74's. Right behind them was Kevin Crystal Lake South and Jim of Carmel at 75. Although the Warriors captured the sectional title by four strokes, Cuda did sweat out the second round. With his players turning scores in the low 40's, he knew they had to turn in second round scores in the 30's to qualify for the state tournament. While Barnicle and Svec each turned in a 37 in the first round, Adams shot a 37 and Neumann, Svec and Vehring each shot a 40 in the second round to help put together the winning score^ "The kids did come through," saia \ tty Par Cuda. Steve Carby got nosed out by Doug Schroeder of York. Steve finished -two seconds behind the winner. Springfield Lamphier finished second to York. Last season the Warriors nipped Lamphier for the second spot. From all reports, our good friends Joe Newton of Yore has another powerhouse and is favorite to win state again. Tomorrow the Warriors are at Veterans may take me to task for this, I believe the officiating at the Crown game was of very poor quality. There is no excuse for being lazy on the field and it was quite evident last Friday night. The Warriors nave promised to come back this week and defeat the Troians. Mike Shanahan's girls' swimming team, although not winning too many meets, are setting some team and school records for future swimmers to try and overcome. Only 12 girls are on the team. Pam Shaffer's volleyball team played 10 games over the weekend at the North Chicago tourney and split their games. The girls are having a tough time of it, but the future looks bright for the volleyball team. Gary Gray's young tennis team is holding its own. They win when they are the top team and lose when they are not. The future is very bright for the popular mentor. The Warriors, Sky hawks and Dundee really put a crack in the crystal ball. One of these days I'm going to hit the jackpot and then watchout. This week I'll pick the state ranked Crystal Lake Gators over Jacobs. The Gators are 10th in the poll for class four-A. The Warriors to rebound from the Crown defeat and beat the Trojans of Cary-Grove for the second time in a row. Central to defeat Crown and spoil the Vikings homecoming. The Streaks to beat Dundee, where two of the best passers in the league will tangle; Bradshaw of Woodstock and Carroll of Dundee. Immaculate Conception, not one of my favorites, to beat the Hurricanes for Coach Jack Lewis of Immaculate Conception 100th career win. Wauconda to beat the Skyhawks. The Skyhawks had their chance last week, but extra points proved costly.
