"Because parts are fewer and smaller in size, four-cyl inder engines have to work harder than larger engines to provide the same perform ance." explains Dave Bow man. Technical Services Manager for Fram/Autolite, a major automotive parts man ufacturer. "Engine miles" Four-cylinder engines re quire more revolutions per minute than six- or eight-cyl inder engines to travel the same distance. For example. Mr. Bowman explains, the average eight- cylinder engine in a large car with an automatic transmis sion requires l ,663 revolu tions to travel one mile. The average four-cylinder engine requires 3.130 revolutions to travel that same distance. "These figures can be translated into engine miles.' When the odometer reads 10.000 miles, the four-cylin der engine will have worked the equivalent of 18.800 miles," says Mr. Bowman. "Smaller engines need to be protected against engine miles. The best way is through more frequent preventive maintenance. It is vital for keeping your small car healthy and fuel efficient. " "Unfortunately," he adds. In a recent na- ional survey of 22,200 motor- sts conducted for Fram/Auto- lite by Market Facts Inc., more than two-thirds said they do not believe small, four- cylinder engines require more frequent maintenance. "These owners need to learn how small cars operate and should look at frequent maintenance as low-cost in surance that can keep up the vehicle's resale value and save them money at the gas pumps," he adds. Severe driving Mr. Bowman suggests mo torists base maintenance schedules on their driving habits. • 'Severe" drivers are those who primarily drive short, stop-and-go trips of 10 miles or less, who drive in dusty areas, who idle extensively, as in heavy traffic, or who tow heavy loads. Fram/Autolite survey* show that nearly 85 percent of the country's drivers fall into this category. "Severe driv ers. particularly those with small cars, should maintain their vehicles more often, at least according to the severe driving schedule listed in owners' manuals," says Mr. Bowman. To keep small cars running smoothly and efficiently, Fram has these maintenance tips: • Oil <4 oil fillers -- Since combustion temperatures in smaller engines are houer. the' motor oil-works harder lubri cating. sealing and protecting parts and may break down sooner. Smaller engines also have smaller oil capacities so there is less oil to do this job. Oil filters also are smaller and there is twice as much oil flowing through these filters. Fram tests have shown smaller filters for most small cars clog faster than the larger filters usually found in eight-cylin der engines. If you are a severe driver, } . ^ change the oil and oil filter every three months or 3,000 miles, whichever comes first. If you drive under "ideal" conditions, such as constant highway driving, change these parts every 6,000-7,000 miles or six months. • Spark plugs -- "When RPMs increase, so do the number of times spark plugs must fire," Mr. Bowman says. "This can shorten plug life and lead to misfiring. ' 'If one out of four plugs in a four-cylinder engine misfires, it could shake your back teeth out; one bad plug in a small en gine is more apparent than one in larger engines. So give your small car a tune-up at least once a year and be sure to re place all four spark plugs at the same time." • Fuel fitters -- Many small cars are, or wii! be, equipped with fuel injectors .vhich improve performance. Therefore, check the fuel filter at each tune-up and re place if necessary. A clogged fuel filter can reduce gas mileage and allow contami nants to enter and damage the fuel injectors. • Wheels and tires -- Smaller tires revolve more times per mile than larger tires. This can produce more heat and increase tread wear. Check the treads monthly and replace the tires when neces sary. FOUR-CYLINDER ENGINES ARE LESS "FORGIVING" of maintenance neglect than eight-cylinder engines because parts are fewer and smaller. With half the number of spark plugs < alto ve), the performance loss from one bad plug in a four-cylinder engine is much more noticeable than one bad plug out of eight in a larger engine. Oil filters (below) also work harder in most four-cylinder engines, handling a greater oil flow than those in larger engines, even though they are smaller in size. This makes tune-ups and regular oil/oil filter changes crucial for extending the life of your small car. AUTOMOTIVE NEEDS OVERHAULING YOUR CAR? We rent all the tools to do that job.
