The families participating in the walk enjoyed a fine autumn day for the hike and fellowship. The proceeds from the fund raiser will be used to continue the many services of the local League group. These include monthly meetings to discuss the art of breastfeeding, monthly coffees to discuss various aspects of mothering, free in formation to doctors and hospitals, 24- hour phone help to mothers in need, training and education of leaders as well as a contribution to LaLeche League International to enable them to continue helping mothers in other countries. LaLeche League was founded in 1958 by a group of mothers who had successfully nursed their babies, and wanted to help others who wanted to nurse. They felt the best way to do this was mother-to-mother help. Since then the League has grown and has 13,000 leaders in the U.S., Canada and 48 other countries. League's motto is good mothering through breast feeding. Persons wanting more information about LaLeche League may call Mrs. Tom (Margie) McCarthy at 385-2688. Fund Raiser For Handicapped The words "Help Retarded Children" on orange-colored jackets will be displayed by an anticipated 10,000 Knights of Columbus workers and volunteers this weekend at street intersections, shopping centers and business marts throughout Illinois. The thirteen annual two-day fund- raising effort for the mentally han dicapped on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 29-30, sponsored by the Catholic fraternal society, is expected to set several records, according to Gus Sundermeier, Sr., state charitable activities director for the K. of C. Not only will more people than ever before be involved in collecting contributions for the mentally han dicapped, but the total donations during the two-day drive should surpass the million-dollar record of last year by at least 10 percent, Sundermeier contends. PAGE9-PLAINOFALER - WF!>N.KSI>AY. OTTOKlftt 27,19H2 A Vote For No-Till The Book family has a winning combination: Soil-saving farming practices and good yields. Jim Book and his sons operate a family farm south of Harvard. They are in the midst of harvest season activities. They have two large zero-till fields of corn totaling 150 acres, part of their ~ 1,500 acres of corn. Jim won't predict the yield yet, but he smiles when he talks about the size and number of ears and the plant population which exceeded his ex pectations. Weed control is excellent too. Visiting a field planted in soybeans a year ago, Book explains he and his sons planted 28,000 and were sur prised to see 26,500 mature. They used a regular planter - no coulters - a Kinze max-emerge unit with no special attachments. The Held has both light and dark soil, and the evenness of the stand appears excellent. "We are saving soil, and that's one of the most important parts," em phasizes Jim. "We're spending $20 an acre less to put the crop in because we-ve reduced the number of trips across the field. "The residue helps save soil, and the pre-emergence spray of liquid Bladex, Aatrex and Dual kept the weeds down. Moisture is retained with the residue. That's worth a lot when we have a dry season." As for yield, the Book family has walked the fields and believes the zero-till yield will match that of the conventionally tilled fields. Yields of 150 bushels an acre in a good year are anticipated. - TELEPHON PIONEERS The Kishwaukee Life Member Club of the Telephone Pioneers of America will hold its monthly meeting Nov. 10, starting at 11:30 a.m. at T.
