Elm Street, Box OC3, McHenry, II. 60050. 10- 20-10-29C by Carl Riblet Jr. Q. - "Both my father and mother are in their late seventies. They seem to be in fairly good health, but their d i s p o s i t i o n s a r e terrible. Dad is grouchy all the time and mom fights with him. Their life has become one long round of arguing, bickering and anger. "I can understand they way dad feels because he doesn't do anything anymore. His friends are all dead and he isn't satisfied with his life with mom. Besides that, he has trouble hearing and he has been told by his doctor not to drive a car. He used to play golf, but not now. Is there any way at all they could get some kind of treatment that would make life nicer for them? I think dad may be a bit senile, but mom isn't." -- Maybelle A. A. -- Maybelle has in fact answered her own question. If her father has no friends after a lifetime of friendships, if he can't hear very well, if he has lq^t the i n d e p e n d e n c e t h a t driving a car gave him, then who in the world can blame him for being grouchy? If it were my father I would get him some acquaintance who might become friends. Maybelle could do this by taking him to events that requii}^ par ticipation by/visitors and onlookers!, such as games. It must be that her dad at some time in his life played horse shoes. Perhaps he was a good card player. If he could watch some people toss a few games of horse shotes, he might get the itch to join them. If he once played golf, find out the reason he quit. If it isn't the e x p e n s e , p e r h a p s Maybelle can get him going to the golf course again. If the father has trouble hearing, he should go to an audiologist to learn just how serious it is and pre heated. 815-344-4231. 10- 15tfc QUIET LOVELY 1 and 2 bedroom apartments, no pets, no children, s e n i o r ; c r 1 1 z e ' n s i w h f t t h e c a n d o a b o u t preferred, $285 to $350 Here is advice that is applicable to every person, of any age: people just don't get grouchy because they like to be that way. So they keep on sending the monthly SS check the , husband had been getting for many years. She endorses the check and spends the money. It's nearly $400 a month Should I tell SS"" Anonymous A. -- It is fraud to endorse the checks of a dead person and then cash them month after month. The widow could end up in jail Anonymous could tell it to Social Security it he- she is convicned beyond doubt that the facts are as told. But Anonymous must be careful not to accuse someone who may be doing no wrong If there is doubt, then she had better remain silent even though somebody may be g e t t i n g a w a y w i t h something that is d i s h o n e s t a n d t a k i n g money away from other taxpayers. Q. - "I have a friend who works in the local Social Security office, helping people go on their SS pension. It used to be that people who reached retirement age of "t were given a lump sum when they went on SS. Not anymore. Now there is no lump ssum. Can you tell me why? " ~ - Gregory P.. A. - The lump sum payment was discon tinued in an effort to jnfave money. My opinion is that it was a payment that in many cases was not needed. Who needs a lump sum when the newly retired person is making enought to live on? I know of a case in 1973 that gave the man a lump sum of $2,500 and the wife one of $1,500. They didn't need it. It was $4,000 that was paid out wrongly, in my opinion. I think it is right and fair that lump sum payemtns were d i s c o n t i n u e d , e v e n though there may be s o m e w h o n e e d t h e money.
